STEERING ATTACHMENT FOR HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,198, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed June 18, 1890. Serial No. 355,876. (No model.)

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

The same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by their designating-numerals, 1 indicates the header beam or tongue of a header or harvester, to
which my invention is shown attached in operative position. Upon this tongue is secured at the point shown a circular bearingplate 2, which is formed with an annular groove 3 near its outer edge and a circular central recess 4..
5 indicates a circular wooden platform, upon the lower side of which is secured concentrically a circular metal casting 6, having the downwardly-extending edge iange 7, the lower edge of which fits and turns in the annular groove 3 of the plate 2, and being formed with a central downwardly-extending collar| 8, the lower end of which fits in the central recess 4 of the bearing-plate.
To the under side of the platform is secured, eccentrically, a metal ring 9, formed with an outwardly-extending flange l0 at its lower edge. This ring may be called the eccentric-ring, as it is secured eccentrically to the wooden platform. is provided with a vertical metal bearing 15, in which Iitsand turns the round stem 17 of a bearing-block 16.
At the end of the tongue 1 is the guidewheel 18, the round shaft 19 of which passes up through a bearing in the tongue and has its upper extremity iiattened. 2O indicates a short round connecting-rod, which passes loosely through and slides in the opening of the bearing-block 16, and is formed near its outer end with a squared opening 2l, through which the squared upper end of the wheelshaft 19 passes. Upon the top of the tongue is formed a circular recess 22, in which a circular bearing-plate 23 is secured, this bearing-plate beingformed with an annular groove 24 in its upper side.

and which has a collar 27 on its lower side, which Iits and turns in the annular groove 24 of the bearing-plate. Upon each end of the casting 25 is pivoted an anti-friction roller 28, having a ange 29 at its lowerend, and the lever 14 passes between these rollers and rests upon their lower end anges, thus greatly reducing friction. Upon the upper side of the platform 5 are secured the series of steps or foot-bars 30, preferably of the form shown. 31 indicates a spring-seat secured upon the tongue at the point shown. Y
In operation the driver sits upon the seat 31, with his feet resting upon the platform, and when he wishes to turn to the right or left steers or guides the harvester by pressing with his feet against the foot-bars 30. It will be seen that when the platform 5 is turned in either direction by pressing with the feet against the bars 30 the eccentric 9 on the lower side of the platform, turning in the lever-ring 12, will slide the lever 14: backward and at the same time to the side, as shown in the drawings, according to the direction in which the platform 5 is turned, thus through the connecting-rod 20 turning the guide-wheel 18 around to either side, as will be clearly seen. The lever slides back and forth between the anti-friction rollers 28 of the casting 25, the casting turning on its central pivot to prevent binding.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the tongue of a harvester and the seat 31 secured upon the same, of the circular platform centrally pivoted upon the tongue, having the foot-bars upon its upper side and the fianged eccentric upon its lower side, the ring 12, encircling the eccentric and having the side `socket 13, the lever 14, having the vertical bearing 15 at its outer end, a bearing 25, in which the said .lever slides, the bearing-block 16, having the round stem 17, the guide-wheel having the squared upper shaft end; and the connecting- 1'od720, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the tongue of a harvester and the seat 31 secured upon the same, of the bearing-plate 2, formed with the annular groove 3 and central recess 4, the platform having thefootbars and the flanged eccentric upon its lower side, the casting 6,

the king-bolt l1, the ring 12, having the side socket 13, the lever 14, having the vertical bearing 15 at its outer end, a bearing 25, in which the said lever slides, the bearing-block 1G, havingthe round stem 17 the guide-wheel having thesquarcd upper shaft end, and the connecting-rod 20, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the tongue of a harvester and the seat 31 secured upon the same, of the circular platform centrally pivoted upon the tongue, having the foot-bars and the flanged eccentric upon its lower side, the ring 12, having the side socket 13, the centrally-pivoted casting 25, having pivoted at its ends the anti-friction rollers 28, having the flanged lower ends, the lever 14, having the vertical bearingv 15 at its outer end, the bearing-block 16, having the round stem 17, the guide-wheel having the squared upper shaft end, and the connecting-rod 20, substant-iallyas set forth.
4. The combination, with the tongue of a harvester and the seat 31 secured upon the same, of the platform` centrally pivoted `upon the tongue, having the foot-bars and` the flanged eccentric upon its lower side, the ring 12, having the side socket 13, the bearingplate 23, formed with the annular groove 24, the centrally-pivoted casting 25, having the collar 27 on its lower side, the anti-friction rollers 28, having the flanged lower ends and pivoted on the ends of casting 25, the lever 14, having the vertical end bearing 15, the bearing-block l, having the round stern 1-7, the guide-Wheel having the squared upper shaft end, and the connecting-rod 20, sul stantially as set forth.
