APPARATUS FOR CHARGING INCLINED GAS-RETORTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,029, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed March 17, 1890. Serial No. 344,250. (No model.) Patented in England October 18, 1889, No. 16,489, and in Germany December 20, 1889, No. 1,458.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDOVICO VAN VES- TRAUT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at The Green, Southall, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Charging Inclined Gas-Retorts, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 16,489, bearing date October 18, 1889, and in Germany, No. 1,458, Vol. 26, 1890, bearing date December 20,1889,) of which the following is a specification.
' The object of this invention is the facilitating of the operation of charging carbonizing retorts when they are built inclined from the horizontal line. A
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is half in section and half full side view. Fig. 2 is a plan of a chute for above purpose, the same being adjustable in length and in position, so as to conduct the coal from a supply above into the mouth of any retort beneath. Fig. 3 is a part vertical section showing portions of three inclined retorts, to the charging of which a chute according to this invention is applied. Fig. 4 is half in section and half side View of the top portion of the uppermostsection broken off, giving an alternate mode of fixing the rollers near the top or mouth of the chute to run on rails B.
On top section of chute a frame (two forms are shown, see Figs. 1 and 4) is provided, which runs on rollers A on suitablerails B above the retorts, and from this carriageframe is suspended an adjustable tubular chute O, which is made in several sections, each section sliding freely within'the other telescopically, but loosely, to allow play. Each section of the chute is balanced by a weight D or weights attached by chains passing over pulleys E, mounted on the top of the next section above. A ring-weight balance is shown supported by three chains but this can be varied. The topmost section of chute is provided with a funnel-shaped or splayed month F, suited to the form and mannerof the coal (or material) supply above. The bottom section is provided with an adj ustable shoe G, which can be varied in form and inclination to suit the material to be carbonized and the mouths of retorts.
The means of adj ustment shown are a screw H or chain 1, fixed on each side of shoe, and a screw J at the back to raise or depress the sliding or delivering shoe at the base of chute, and is indicated by dotted lines.
In operating, when it is required to charge a retort, the mouth-piece of same is opened, the chute drawn into position close to retort, and the sections slide free one within another. It can be deviated from vertical line and raised or lowered until the shoe-pieceat bottom fits into and on the floor of retort, whereupon coals can be delivered into the upper end of the chute, so as to descend into the retort, as shown in Fig. 3, where the chute is also shown by small dotted lines extended to retort beneath. When the retort is charged, the chute is withdrawn, moved away, and the mouth of retort closed, and the operation continued on any other retort ready for charglng.
The chute need not necessarily be carried on rails above the retorts, as it can be carried on a light frame K, running on wheels on the floor or stage, when more convenient so to do, as shown in Fig. 3, as hereinbefore described, by the longer dotted lines, a description of the frame being unnecessary.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a chute and an adjustable deliverin -shoe at the base thereof, with a screw and a chain ateach side of the chute and shoe, and a screw at the rear portions thereof, substantially as set forth.
