(No Model.) I I .J. V. HOTOHKISS.
P'ULLING DEVIGB. No. 436,000. Patented Sept. 9, 1890.
I it M "W m/mt??? ri "It F ii! IIIIIIIUIIIIII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH V. HOTOHKISS, OF JAY, INDIANA.
PU LLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,000, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed April 15 1890- Serial No. 348,067. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. HOTOHKISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jay P. 0., in the county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Moving Wrecked Cars, Pulling Stone-Guts from Ledges, Moving Houses, Pulling Stumps, 850.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a machine adapted for elevating stone and other heavy articles, moving houses, pulling stumps, and serving as a derrick in stone-quarries.
'Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section 011 a smaller scale.
In the drawings, A represents the base, on which at one end are erected the postsB B, connected by a cross-bar, the said posts B B and bar B forming a frame for the Windlass C. The latter, as Well as the crank-shaft D, has hearings in the said posts, the Windlass being provided with a spur-wheel E and crank-shaft D, with a pinion E, so that the pinion may mesh with and rotate the spur- Wheel.
F is a cable, whose two ends are made fast in rin gs f f on the opposite sides of the upper end of the lever G, then is coiled around the windlass C, and then passes under the base-rollers H H and up over a roller I, trunnioned be-' tween the posts J J, which rise up on an incline from the base A and are connected at the top by a cap-bar K. The lever G is fulcrumed on a shaft L, which has its bearings a on the base-beams a a and is provided on each side with a fast ratchet M and a fast concave pulley N, the ratchet-wheels M being turned by the pivoted pawls g g, one on each side of the lever.
O is the drag rope or chain, which has one end made fast to the periphery of each pulley N and its middle provided with a grap pling-hook P. It will thus be perceived that the pulleys N N, which wind up the dragrope O and the ratchets M M, are both fast on the same shaft L, While the leverG turns looselythereon, and by means of its pawls g g turns the shaft L from right to left, as shown in the drawings. This turn is, however, only for a short distance, where it is held by the detent-pawls g, while the lever G is carried back to take another hold, when it is again pulled to the left, and so on until the work is done. Now, the means which I employ to actuate the lever G in both direc tions are the cable F on the rolls H H I and the Windlass mechanism operated by hand. By being properly fastened down at the base and the grapple connected with a stump or with a tree it may be pulled up by the roots, or a house on rollers may be moved. By causing the drag-rope O with its grapple to pass over the roller I heavy weights may be I lifted with great convenience.
The grapple shown in the drawings is for pulling stone-cuts from a quarry-ledge, the chain being run direct from the drum through a ring and then double to the stone on which the grapple is hooked. For pulling houses on rollers or any other heavy weight the chain is passed directly from the drum to the house and attached thereto, or may be first passed over the upper pulley, as may be preferred.
Having combined this mechanism to multiply power at the expense of velocity, one man is enabled to draw or lift a heavy weight; but I may employ any suitable power, according to the Work to be done.
vWVhat I claim as new, and desire to protect leys N N, and drag-rope 0, provided with a.
grapple P, said ratchet-Wheels being mounted on and carried by the shaft L, whereby the whole may be conveniently used, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH V. HOTOI-IKISS. Witnesses:
D. H. HARVEY, W. E. PRENTIOE.
