Description

JOSEPH MOTTET, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR STRETCHING PANTALOONS.
Spceilicationforming par's of Letters Patent No. 43,596, dated July i9, 1864.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH MoTTE'r, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Frame for Stretchin Pantaloons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a plate and two cross-pieces, with clamps, or their equivalents, the whole being arranged and operated as described hereinat'ter, and `forming a frame on Which pantaloons may be stretched, and their length thereby increased, when they have shrunk in consequence ot' the cloth having been insufciently spouged or dampened prior to the pantaloons being made.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specitication, Figure l is a plan view of my improved frame for stretching pautaloons, and Fig. 2 a section on theline l 2, Fig. l.
A is a plate, at right angles to which, near one end, is secured a cross-piece,B, the other end of the plate passing through a cross-piece, U, which is arranged to slide on the said plate parallel to the cross-piece B. Near one end ot` this cross-piece B is hinged a clamp, D, through the outer end of which passes a screw, cl, into the 4cross-piece beneath it. On each sideoi'a central enlargement, x, ofthe crosspiece U is hinged a clamp, E, a screw, a', pass ing through the outer end of each clamp and into the end ot' the cross piece beneath it. In the ceuteror' the plate A are a number of openings, e, to which is adapted a pin, d.
It is well known that woolen goods, of which many articles vof wearing apparel are made, are frequently insufficiently sponged or dampened before being made into garments, and that consequently when such articles become wet they sometimes shrink to such a degree as to render them unfit for use. rlhis is especially the case with pantaloons, which are not so readily protected from the wet by cloaks or umbrellas as are upper garments.
By my improved stretching apparatus I am enabled to restore shrunken pantaloons to nearly their original length. The upper part ota pair of pantaloons, X, is lirst introduced between the clamp D and the cross-piece B, and the clamp is brought to bear Iirmly on the pantaloons and to secure the latter in their position by means ofthe screw a. The lower end ot' each leg is then secured in a similar manner between one of the clamps E and the cross-piece C, care being taken that the pantaloons shall be as tree from creases as possible. The cross-piece C is then drawn away from the cross piece B, so as to stretch the pautaloons to as great an extentas desirable.
The pin d is introduced into one ot' the openings e nearest the inner edge ot' the crosspiece, and the pantaloons are steamed or sponged, and, it necessary, cleaned, the crosspiece C being drawn farther back whenever the clothV stretches to'such a degree as to permit the piu d to be introduced into the next lower opening. When the pantaloons have beenstretched to a sufficient extent, they are thoroughly dried. and then removed from the fra-me. By this means I have found that I can lengthen an ordinarysized pair ot pantaloons from three to tive inches, according to the quality ofthe cloth, and that the creases formed in the pantaloons from the unequal shrinking of the cloth, caused by its having been insufficiently sponged, can be entirely removed.
It will be obvious that other dev be used instead ofthe clamps l) and smay curing the pantaloons to the cross-pieces.
I claim as my invention and desire to se- I' cure by Letters Patent- The plate A, with its cross-pieces Band C, and the clamps D and E, or their equivalents, the whole being arranged and opera-ting substantially as and for thefpurpose specified.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specitication in the presence ol' two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH I'IOITET.
Witnesses CHARLES E. Fosrnn, J or-IN WHITE.
