SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,937, dated September 9, 1890.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J oHN LARKIN, of Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in inkstands; and it consists in the particular construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

The object of my invention is to provide the inkstand with an air opening or escape, through which the air may be permitted to escape when it becomes expanded, so as to force the ink up into the funnel, and to provide a means whereby the inkstand may be filled through the funnel.

The accompanying drawing represents a vertical section of an inkstand which embodies my invention.

A represents an automatically-acting inkstand, such as is shown and described in the patent granted to me November 8, 1889, and B is the funnel, which is used in connection therewith. Extending horizontally through the stem G of this funnel at any suitable point is a small pin or plugI of any kind, which serves 4to obstruct the flow of ink through the stem sufliciently to prevent the ink from spurting up above the funnel when it is suddenly depressed.

Through the side of the inkstand at any suitable pointis formed an opening O, through which the air can be allowed to freely escape, and which is closed by a suitable plug or covering D of any kind that may be preferred. The opening C is formed through a plug F, which is provided with an annular groove E, that is engaged by the wall of the stand and which holds it securely in place.

It has been found that when the air inside of the inkstand becomes expanded from heat the expansion of the air acting upon the top of the ink will force the ink up into the funnel, and thus do away to a certain extent with the automatic action of the inkstand. While the ink stands in this funnel it evaporates and thickens on the rubber. In order to do away with this defect, the air opening or escape is made through the inkstand, so that whenever the ink rises in the funnel it is only necessary to remove the plug to allow the expanded air to escape, and then the ink to position the inkstand is again in condi-4 tion to operate. This escape also serves to allow the inkstand to be quickly and readily filled by pouring the ink into the funnel. As long as the plug or cover is removed the air freely escapes, and this does away with the necessity of having to invert the inkstand and ll it through its bottom, as shown and described in said patent.

In order to prevent the body A of the inkstand, which is made of rubber, from being struck or compressed by objects striking against it, and to prevent the ink from being forced out in case the inkstand should be dropped upon the iioor, a metallic covering O is placed around the body, as shown, and this cover conforms to the general shape of the body and has a neck or flange P to project upward a slight distance above the top of the cone or funnel, as shown. The body being entirely protected, as' shown, it is immaterial whether the inkstand is upset or dropped or struck, the ink willnot be forced out upon the table, the floor, or surrounding objects.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination, with an ink-reservoir havin ga flexible top and avertically-moving tube which passes through the said top for feeding the ink to the pen by a pressure thereon, of

a hard protecting-casing which surroundsthe f said reservoir and which is provided with a vertical annular flange which extends up around the outer end of the said tube for protectin g it against an accidental pressure, substantially as shown and described.
