Description

(NO Model.)
S. R. TRIPP.
POLE AND YOKB COUPLING FOR VEHICLES.
Patented Sept. 2, 1890.
gasses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY R. TRIPP, OF IIAMMONDSPORT, NE\V YORK, ASSIGNOR TO VINCENT Ii. TRIPP AND MILTON R. TRIPP, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
POLE AND YOKE COUPLING FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,871, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed March 13,1890. Serial No. 343,803- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIDNEY R. TRIPP, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Hammondsport, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Swivel-Connections for Vehicle-Poles and Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to means for connecting neck-yokes to vehicle-poles, and the object thereof is to render such connection simple, safe, economical, and durable.
To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a neck-yoke and vehicle-pole with my improved connecting devices. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the metal bars or straps forming part of the connection. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved tumbler; and Fig' 4: is an end view of my improved plate, forming part of the connection.
In the annexed drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a vehicle-pole, and 2 a neckyoke. The numeral 3 represents metal bars or straps, which are bolted to the vehicle-pole, as at 4 4, the ends of which bars or straps project forward beyond the end of the vehiclepole and are provided with openings5 for the reception of pivots formed on the tumbler, hereinafter described.
The numeral 6 represents a plate adapted to be bolted to the neck-yoke 2, as shown in the drawings, and which is formed with a lug or pin 7, projecting therefrom. This lug or pin is preferably made conical in form, for a pun pose presently set forth.
The numeral 0 denotes a tumbler, which is formed at its top and bottom with pivots 10, preferably conical in form, adapted to engage the openings 5 in the bars or straps 3. This tumbler is also provided with an opening 11, extending through itsbody and adapted to receive the lug or pin 7 on the plate (3.
In, connecting a neck-yoke and vehicle-pole by means of my invention the plate 6 is bolted to the neck-yoke, as shown, and the bottom (the one applied at the top only being shown) and the pivots 10 are then headed down, as at 15, over the washers.
I prefer to make the lug or pin '7 and the pivots 1O conical in form, whereby wear can be compensated by heading down where essen tial; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this construction.
That I claim is l. The combination, with the vehicle-pole and neck-yoke, of the bars or straps 3, having openings 5, the plate 6, formed with pin or lug 7, and the tumbler 9, having pivot-pins 10 and opening 11, substantiallyas described.
2. In a swivel-connection for vehicle-poles and neck-yokes, the combination, with bars or straps 3, of a tumbler pivoted thereto, and a plate secured to the neck-yoke and formed with a lug or pin for engagement with said tumbler, substantially as described.
3. In a swivel-connection for vehicle-poles and neck-yokes, the combination, with the bars or straps 3, of a tumbler havingan opening through its body pivoted in said bars or straps, and a plate (3, formed with a pin or lug 7, for engagement with the opening in said tumbler, substantially as described.
l. In a swivel-connection for vehicle-poles and neck-yokes, a tumbler formed with pivots 10 for engagement with bars or straps on the pole, and an opening 11 for engagement 0 with a plate of the neck-yoke, substantially as described.
SIDNEY R. TRIPP.
