.During the operation of' the pawl-the teeth 'of the 'ratchet 'wheel rest against the sliding. rod Q, whch,jbeing unyielding and having an' 'inclination as lshown in Fig.v I, causes the ratchet-wheel, cylinder, 'and frame Sitte swing back away from thehooks M M', thereby greatly easing'the movement of the chain by 'prevent- 'ing'its'pins from dragging continually againstthe, hooks M M. As vthel pattern-chain' revolves, those hooksM M which have thefpinsofthe chain presented opposite-to' thennf by the movement jofthe chain are .pressed inward'l to ward' the knifen, andcaused to be caught by that knil'e'which in .its descent pui-Ls downl those hooks andl thereby raisesthe attached leaves ot' harness, while the hooks which have no pins prescntedfopposte'tothcm arecaught by the knife, n, whichf in itsA ascent raises those hooks, and thereby 'produces the depression of `theattached leaves of'harness.-
