UAR BRAKE.
Patented Sept. 2, 1890.

CHARLES \V. STRINGHAM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
CAR-BRAK E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,571, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed January 24, 1890- Serial No. 337,989. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES \V. STRING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the cityof Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to improve Patent No. 310,965, which was granted to me on the 20th day of January, 1885, for an improvement in car-brakes. In the said patent the brake set forth is only illustrated and described as being applicable to an ordinary street-car, and on account of its rigidity would not allow for the deflection of the trucks of an ordinary steai'n-railroad car incident to running around a curve.
The improvement consists in providing a flexible connection for this purpose.
The nature of the invention consistsin the details of combination and construction, substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating a part of a railroad-truck with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan view further illustrating my invention.
The frame-work of the truck is designated by c c c". In this are journaled the shafts that carry the wheels ff in the common and well-known way, and on these shafts are also mounted the ordinary wheels of the car. 6 e designate a sliding bar attached in any convenient way to the frame of the truck, so that it will slide a little endwise. To this bar are attached cars it h, in which are by one end pivoted levers i i. Upon the other ends of these levers are journaled rollers t" i. To these same ends of these lovers are attached theband-brakesf,which surround the wheels To move this bar 0, the lever I is provided. This lever is pivoted at d to the sleeper of the car. The end of this lever next to the pivot is provided with an additional arm d, which is bent in a curve concentric with the king-bolt 7t. Upon these curved arms work the sleeves e of the bar To move this levcr l, a coupling-harm,which extendslengthwise along the bottom of the car, is pivoted to the lever at 92. There should be two of these levers to each truck, and they are coupled by the bar 072, as illustrated. The bar m may be operated with a chain, upright shaft, ratchet, and hand-wheel in the usual way or in any other convenient way for each separate car; or all the contiguous ends of the bars in a train may be joined together by means of any approved coupling, so that the engineer may work the brakes of the whole train from the engine. As will be seen from the illustration, these bars and levers are so arranged that they maybe moved from either end of the car. The whole device is to be as illustrated in the drawings. While there is no pull on the levers, the spring of the bandbrakes f" will draw down the rollers b" so far on the wheel that the said brake will en'- tirely clear said wheel; but as soon as the sliding bar 6 is moved one way or the other, as hereinbefore described, the band-brake begins to bind the wheel f. This pressure may be increased as required until the wheels cease to turn. \Vhen the pressure is relaxed, the band-brake will assume its original position clear of the wheel f. Then by reason of passing around a curve in the road or othwise the truck is deflected from its original. position, it will turn a little on the king-bolt 7t, and the segmental arms (I being formed in arcs concentric with the king-bolt, the eyes 6 will slide upon them easily and readily, so that no matter what position the truck may assume it will not in any way hinder the working of the device.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to soon re by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the truck and body of a railroz'nil-car, of a sliding bar mounted in the frame of said truck, wheels mounted on the axles of said truck, levers pivoted to said sliding bar, rollers mounted upon the. outer ends of said levers, band-brakes also attached to the outer ends of said levers and embracing the said wheels, levers having segmental arms pivoted upon the bottom of said body, segmental arms upon said levers, sleeves rigidly attached to said sliding bar and working on said segmental arms, a bar coupling said levers, and means for actuating said bar, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereto set my hand, in presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of December, 1885).
C. \V. S'lRINGlIAM.
