MARIAN M. GREEN, oE COUNTY LINE,TENNEssEE.
COMBINED RAILWAY-CHAIR AND CROSS-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,221, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed June 2, 1890. Serial No. 354,066. (Nomodel.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known: that I, MARIAN M. GREEN, residing at'County Line, in the county of Moore and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Combined Railway -Chair and Cross-Tie, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention has for its object to provide a combinedrail-chair and cross-tie which will possess the necessary elements of strength, durability, and general efficiency; and it consists in the novel arrangement and peculiar combination of parts, all of which will hereinafter be fully described in the annexed specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
In the accompanying` drawings,A indicates the metallic cross-tie, which is formed in two sections a a', jointed as at a2, preferably by forming the section a with a tongue a4, which fits a socket d3 in the section a', said sections in g-plate B and the bolts h ZJ, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings. By reference to said figures and Fig. 3 it will be seen thatIform the cross-tie H shape in crosssection, the plate B fitting in the upper socket h, and to each end of said plate is seated the base c of the pillow-blocks C C, said base being formed with dovetailed channels c c', which fit the upper socket h, the side walls thereof being` dovetailed, as shown.
By connecting the pillow-block to the crosstie in the manner described the same cannot be pulled up away from the tie, and to hold said block from lateral movement I secure the same to the cross-tie by means of the lockbolts D D, which pass through the extensions C of the block and through apair of a series of apertures a5 a5 in the tie, as shown.
Upon each of the pillow-blocks C is mounted a chair E, which consists of the base portion e, extended at e e,and the fixed guide or brace e2, which bears against one side of the web of the rail F, an adjustable guide-brace e3 being provided, which bears against the opposite side of the rail, said brace e3 being formed becomes packed therein. serve to hold the rails above the surface of tages of my improvement will readily ap-` pear. It will be seen that by the said construction I am enabled to lay a solid bear ing for the rails in soft or marshy lands, and by forming the cross-tie in the shape shown the hollow bottom will keep the same from sinking in the ground but ,little farther than the depth of the lower socket as the earth The pillow-blocks the ground or the water in marshy lands.
In laying road-beds with my improvements the cross-tie, the pillow-block, and the chair can be used in marshy sections and the chair and the cross-tie alone used in the dry or hard ground districts; or the tie and the pillowblocks may be dispensed with and the chairs bolted directly to the ordinary wooden ties, the additional apertures 10 being provided for the spikes.
By providing the tie Awith a series of apertures a5 the same may be readily secured to bridge-timbers, and by dividing said tie, as described, Inakes it give to the sudden strain or jars caused by rapidly-movin g trains, as metal ties, when made in a single piece, are frequently cracked or broken by sudden strains.
My improvements are readily adapted for broad or narrow gage roads.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat' curing the block to the tie and the chair to` the block, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combinatiomwith the tie A, H shape in cross-section, the upper socket h,
IOO
formed dovetailed, of the pillow-block C,
formed with a base c, having dovetailed channels c, adapted to t the dovetail socket h,
and the chair E, supported on lche pillow- 5 block, and means for securing said chair to the block, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the cross-tie A,
formed with a dovetail socket h, of a pillow- :o block formed with a dovetal base c, held in said soekeigand a rail-chair formed of the base portion having a xed flange or brace 4 MARIAN M. GREEN. Witnesses:
J. T. BICKLEY, B. E. SPENCER.
