S. W. EVANS, Jr. FERRULE FOR GANES, UM'BRELLAS, 850.
(No Model.)

m 8 m w W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL WV. EVANS, JR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FERRU LE FOR 'CAN ES, U M BRELLAS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,216, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed January 6, 1890. Serial No. 335,952. (No model.)
To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WV. EVANS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ferrules for Canes, Umbrellas, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompan yin g drawings. I
My invention consists of connecting a point with a ferrule by means of an inverted cup or shell which is clamped to said point and clamped by the ferrule.
Figures 1 and 2 represent longitudinal sections of a ferrule embodying my invention, the same illustrating different steps of producing the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a ferrule, and B a hollow point, which is connected with said ferrule by means of an in verted cup or shell G. The ferrule is primarily formed with a fiarin g end D, into which the cup 0 is fitted, said cup being primarily of cylindrical form and having at its outer end a shoulder-E, against which the adjacent edge of the ferrule abuts. After the point B has been inserted in the cup, the ferrule and cup are subjected to the action of a suitable tool or implement, whereby the flaring end D and side of the cup C are pressed inwardly, thus clamping the side of the cup against the side of the point and the end of the ferrule against the side of the cup, forming in a measure dovetailed joints for the ferrule, cup, and point, whereby the point is securely connected with the ferrule, and can neither be drawn out nor pushed in, it being seen that the head of the point rests against the inverted base of the cup, and the latter is restrained from inward motion, owing to its shoulderE being in contact with the edge or end of the ferrule.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A ferrule having a flaring end, a cup with an outwardly-projecting flange against -whieh said flaring end abuts, and a point embraced by said cup and end, substantially as described.
2. A ferrule having a cup with a projecting flange against which a lower edge of the ferrule abuts, and a point embraced by said cup, substantially as described.
