SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,801, dated August 19, 1890.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOVENIA E. PEASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Sham Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

' My invention has relation to improvements in pillow-sham holders; and the novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a perspective View of my improvements in position upon the headboard of a bed, the adjustable standard being shown in dotted lines in its raised position.

By the construction of my improvements, as hereinafter described, it will appear that the same may be employed upon the headboard of a bed of any width or height and with any amount of raised ornamentation Without marring or disfiguring the same by scratches or screw-holes.

In carrying out my invention the main standard or upright A, which may be of any preferable material andlength, is attached to the base-rail of the head-board by parallel horizontal strips B, and secured to said baserails by screws or otherwise. These strips B are provided at their middles and on the side adjacent to the bed-rail with recesses or standard A adjacent to one end thereof. By

this constructi on it will be seen that the standard A and its accompanying parts may be readily placed in position and secured to the key D, and as readily removed, without in any manner altering the appearance of the head-board,ashas been described. The horizontal strips B are placed upon the base-rail of the head-board and are consequently hidden from view by the mattress and bedding.

At a point adjacent to the upper end of standard A, and upon the inner side thereof, I place an inwardly-disposed cushion F, of rubber or other material, whereby the said standard is held out from the head-board, and damage to the latter and any ornamentation thereon is obviated.

The vertically movable and adjustable standard or upright G, Which is preferably formed of a single piece of wire of suitable diameter, is provided at its lower end with a horizontal loop of rectangular contour, which embraces and travels vertically upon the upright standard A. After forming the horizontal loop a, I bring the wire together at the front of the upright A and form a verticallydisposed outwardly-curved handle portion b at right angles to the horizontal embracingloop, after which the branches are respectively bent laterally in opposite directions, as at c, and are then carried upwardly adjacent to the sides of standard A for a sufficient distance, when they are again bent laterally in opposite directions, as at d, and then bent upon themselves to form loops for the attachment to said upright of the lateral shamholding a'rms, presently to be described.

At a suitable point in one side of the standard A, I cut a longitudinal recess, and at the upper end of said recess I provide an opening of greater depth for the play of the inwardly-directe'd end of the spring-catch H, which has its lower end attached to the standard at the lower end of the longitudinal slot and .its upper horizontal and inwardly-directed end playing in the opening at the top of the longitudinal slot.- Now it will be seen that when the adjustable upright has been moved upwardly a sufficient distance the horizontal loop a will ride over the springcatch and depress the same, when, after the loop has passed, the spring will assume its normal extended position and support said movable standard in its raised position.

Adjacent to the upper end of the standard A, and upon the front side thereof, I place guide-eyes I for the guidance of the parallel arms of the upright G.

The lateral bracket-arms J, to which the shams are attached by hooks arranged at intermediate points, may be constructed of any approved material. These two lateral arms J overlap each other and are provided at intermediate points in their length with transverse apertures f for the reception of screws or bolts K, which connect said radial arms together, and around which the upper bent portions of the adjustable standard G pass, thus effecting a connection between the upright and the lateral arms.

Having described my invention, what 1 claim is' 1. The combination, with a horizontal strip attached to the head-board of a bed and provided with a recess upon its inner side and the locking-key pivotally attached to the under side of said strip, of the upright standard A, provided with a notch in its side adjacent to its lowerend and adapted to receive the swinging end of the pivoted key, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A pillow-sham holder comprising a standard adapted to be secured to a bed-frame, a spring-catch on said standard, and a vertically-sliding sham-holder frame having its lower end embracing the standard and adapted to be held in an elevated position by said catch, substantially as specified.

3. The frame formed from a single piece of wire bent at or about midway of its length to form a vertically-disposed loop and having vertically-disposed branches terminating in lateral arms, in combination with a standard adapted to be secured to the head-board of a bed and receive the loop of the wire frame, substantially as specified.

l. The pillow-sham holder described, comprising the standard, the spring-catch secured thereto, the guide-eyes in said standard, the wire frame having its lower end provided with a vertical loop and its upper ends terminating in lateral-looped branches, and horizontal bars for the attachment of shams secured to said arms, substantially as specified.

5. In a sham-holder, the combination, with the standard, of a vertically-movable frame mounted thereon, and laterally-adjustable bars secured to the upper end of said movable frame, substantially as specified.

(i. The combination,with a standard, of the vertically-movable frame having its upper end terminating in lateral loops, the horizontal movable bars overlapping each other and having perforations, and the screws for connecting the said bars passing through the lateral loops of the movable frame, substantially as specified.
