Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH MCGEE, OF LANCASTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
LOCKING WHIPS TO THEIR SOCKETS.
SIEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,519, dated August 19, 1890.
Y Application iledDecember 17, 1889. Serial No. 334,021. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MCGEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Coos and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing lVhips to their Sockets; and I do declare the following t-o be a full, clear, and lexact description of the invention, such as will enable others lskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Y
The special object of the invention is to secure whips to the socket on vehicle so that they cannot be stolen, as now so often happens in country towns and'wherever they are not removed from their sockets after a drive.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l of the4 drawings is a perspective view of a whip-socket With a whip locked thereto; Fig. 2, a detail view of the butt-end of a whip provided with a metallic tube carrying an eye and ring. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a small padlock, which I preferably use in connection with my invention.
In the drawings, A represents a whip-socket, in which I make a longitudinal slot a, and B is the butt-end of a whip, fitted with the mesocket, with the ring D lying on one side, so
that it Will not obstruct the entry into the socket. The Whip is then turned with the ring against the inside wall of the socket, and in the direction in which the ring is turned. As soon as the ring touches the wall of the slot a it will rise to a perpendicular and protrude through the slot, so that the hasp of a padlock E may be pushed through the ring into the lock, the key turned, and the whip securely locked to the socket.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding ot' my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Let ters Patent, is-
A whip having the tube C on its butt-end and a ring D pivoted to and turning laterally on said tube, in combination with a longitudinally-slotted socket and locking mechanism, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afix my Signat ure in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH MCGEE. Vitnesses:
J. Q. WILLIAMS, J. H. IWICGEE.
