SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,373, dated August 12, 1890. Application filed July 3, 1889. Serial No. 316,483. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID L. BARNES, of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Steam- Traps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of car-heating apparatus, wherein steam is used for the heating medium.
In this invention I have combined with the usual circulating-pipes trap-pipes and a trap or valve, which is so constructed, as will be herein described, that when the trap-pipes cool, due to the presence of water of condensation therein, the said trap-pipes, by their contraction in length, automatically open the trap or valve and discharge the water of condensation.

The usual main steam-pipe to, extending, preferably, beneath the car, is provided, as herein shown, near each end of the car with suitable T-connections, from which lead the short pipes at, said pipes leading to the valvecases I) b, the said valve-cases containing suitable valves operated by the spindles b b to control the passage of steam through the Leading from the valve-cases b b are the crossover pipes c c, said pipes extending to the side of the car, and are there connected to opposite ends of the usual radiating-pipes cl. The radiating-pipes cl drop gradually from the center toward each end, so that any water of condensation will flow out into the pipes c 0. Connected with the pipes c c are the trap-pipes e 6', said pipes being inclined downward and extending toward the center of the car, where they are connected by means of a telescopic joint which constitutes the trap or valy e to be described.
Referring to Fig. 4, the end of the pipe 6 is enlarged and internally screw-threaded to receive the threaded end of the nipple e held in adjusted position with relation to its length bythe lock-nut a The opposite or smooth thus withdrawing the nipple e slightly from the pipe e, opening the outlet e", and allowing the water of condensation to escape. Then the water of condensation shall have escaped and the pipes c e are again heated by the presence of steam therein, they will again expand longitudinally, forcing the nipple e again into the pipe e and closing the outlet 6 I do not desire to limit myself to the pre cise arrangement of pipes herein shown, as it is evident that the same may be varied and modified without departing from the scope of this invention. Neither do I desire to limit myself to the particular trap or valve shown, as the longitudinal movement of the pipes e 6' may be utilized to operate any other kind of trap or valve as well.
I claim- 1. In a car-heating system, the combination, with the circulating-pipes, of two trappipes connected with said circulating-pipes and extending toward each other, one of which is provided with a suitable valve case or seat and the other with a co-opcrating valve for said valve case or seat, said valve consisting of a nipple adjustably connected to these trap-pipes, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a car-heating system, the combination, with the circulating-pipes, of two trappipes connected with said circulating-pipes and extending toward each other, one of which is provided with a suitable valve case or seat and the other with a co-operating valve for said valve case or seat, whereby the longitudinal contraction of said trap-pipes, dueto the presence of water of condensation therein, will open said valve and discharge said water of condensation, substantially as described.
