WRIST PIN.
(No Model.)
No. 434,236. Patented Aug 12, 1890.
- (Bl/mwwaw wani g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BARTHEL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
WRIST-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,236, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed June 2, 1890. Serial No. 353,958. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs BARTHEL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W ri st- Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates more particularly to those wrist-pins that are employed as a means of connection between the main shaft crank and piston of a steam-engine; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation, partly in section, and illustrates my improved wrist-pin in connection with a crank; Fig. 2, an end view of the wrist-pin without its cap. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the cap, and Fig. 4 a front elevation of said wrist-pin.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a shaft, B a crank fast thereon, and O my improved Wrist-pin fitted to the crank. The wrist-pin has the outer end of i s body portion provided with a screw-threaded stem D, and this stem maybe engaged by atapped opening in said body portion of the wrist-pin, as shown, or the latter may be turned down to form said stem. In addition to the stem D, the outer end of the body portion of the wrist-pin is provided with lugs E, and the latter may be integral with said body portion of the wrist-pin or provided with screwthreads for engagement with tapped openings therein, the latter construction being the one illustrated. The lugs E engage openings in washers F, that surround the stem D, and slipped onto this stem is a cap G, that engages the body portion of the wrist-pin and impinges against the piston-rod (shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1) or pitman thereon. The cap G is provided with recesses b for engagement with the lugs E, and held in place against the washers F by means of a set-nut H on the screw-threaded stem D, and the setnut is locked in its adjusted position by means of a check-nut I, that is also arranged on said stem? By the arrangement of the lugs E and washers or packing F'the latter is prevented from turning on the adjacent stem. In case the piston-rod or pit-man has loose lateral play on the Wrist-pin the cap G is detached from the stem D and a certain amount of the packing formed by the washers F removed, after which said cap is replaced on said stem and forced in by the nut H as far as possible on the body portion of the wristpin 0, whereby said piston-rod or pitman is brought snug against the crank B of the shaft A and the loose lateral play overcome. This is of especial advantage in connection with steam-engines, as it prevents pounding of the piston due to loose lateral play of its rod on the wrist-pin.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A wrist-pin having one end thereof provided with a stem, a cap slipped onto the stem, a packing interposed between the cap and adjacent end of the wrist-pin, and suitable means for clamping the cap against the packing, substantially as set forth.
2. A wrist-pin having one end thereof provided with a screw-threaded stem, a cap arranged on the stem, 2. set-nut also arranged on said stem to oppose the cap, and a packing interposed between the said cap and adjacent end of the wrist-pin, substantially as set forth.
3. A wrist-pin having one end thereof provided with a screw-threaded stem, a cap, setnut, and check-nut arranged on the stem, and a packing interposed between the cap and adjacent end of said wrist-pin, substantially as set forth.
at. A Wrist-pin having one end thereof provided with a stem and lugs, a cap slipped onto the stem and provided with recesses for engagement with the lugs, a packing engag ing the lugs and stem between the cap and wrist-pin, and suitable means for clamping said cap against the packing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
