Description

(No Model.)
J. WADE. WAGON BRAKE.
No. 434,027. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JAMES R. IVADE, OF MILLFIELD, OHIO.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,027, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed April 30, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES R. IVADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millfield, inthe county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of my invention is to make a wagon-brake with which greater or less friction may be applied to the wheels, as occasion may require, and one which will not be liable to get out of order.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a bottom view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
In the drawings,A represents the runninggear of a wagon, on which is fastened the cross-beam B, and to this is screwed the plate 0, which is threaded at each end, and there provided with the nuts 0, between which and the collar 0 is suspended the U -shaped hanger D.
E is the brake-bar swung by eyes 6 e from the hanger D and connected by rods F F with the arms g g of a shaft G by pivots, the said shaft being allowed to turn in bearings h h of metallic rods H H, bolted to the wagon running-gear. On one end of the shaft G is made fast an arm I, slotted at 1', and in this slot works the slide J, which is swiveled on a pivot K, that also passes through the ends of the rods L M, the former turning on a pivot O, projecting from a plate bolted to the side of the wagon and the latter to a hand-lever P Serial No. 350,051. (No model.)
by means of a slideQ and bifurcated bar R, pivoted to a bolt S on the side of the wagon. The rod M; the slide Q, and the bar R all turn upon the same pivot T, so that the slide may move up and down in the lever-slot 19.
\V is a rack-bar on the side of the wagon, in which works the pawl V, pivoted at its rear end to the lever, and connected by a pivoted rod '0 with the elbow-lever W, which is pivoted to a lever projection w, and operated by a spring X to hold the detent-pawl in the rack.
TheleverP is turned toward the front of the wagon to put the brake-shoes Y against the periphery of the wheels, and in the opposite direction to take them off, the detent-pawl being lifted in the latter case.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the shaft G, having slotted arm I, of the slide J and rods M L, pivoted on the same bolt K, the wagon-side bolt 0, forming a bottom pivot for rod L, the slotted hand-lever P, the rod M, slide Q, and bar R, pivoted on the same bolt T, and the wagon-bolt S, which forms a pivot for the bottom of the bar R, whereby said shaft G may be turned, as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. WADE.
