STEAM-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,993, dated August 12, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRUNO V. NORDBERG, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to steam-pumps, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through the center of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, partly in section.
A is the Outer shell of the pump, and A its base. The shellis formed with two chambers B, which extend from the bottom of the shell up to a partition a, that separates them from the outlet-chamber b.
C is a partition that. separates the chambers B from each other. On each side of the partition Cthe shell is provided with a partition d, that separates one of the chambersB from chambers E and F, and also forms with the subjacent portion of the shell a cylinder for one of the plungers D on the right and D2 on ihe left. The chambers E and F on each side are separated from each other by a partition 3o f, and valves g, which cover openings in partition f, and each chamber F is connected A with the cylinder on its side by a port e and with chamber B by valves h in the upper portion of the shell. The plungers D D2 are connected with each other by cross-heads H and rods K, and one of the plun gers is adapted for being coupled to the piston of a steam-engine in any suitable manner. Each of the cylinders is formed' with a port t' at one end and a port j at the other, the port i opening down into a pipe I and the portj opening down into a pipe J, and these pipes intercept each other and are joined at their outer ends, the pipe I opening up into pipe Jthrough the valve-seat m of a valve M, and this valve is suspended by a stem N from a yoke O, that in turn is supported by a cam-plate P on one of the rods K, that connects the cross-heads with each other. The upper end of the yoke O may be formed with a guide p, that slides in a lug q on the shell, and the yoke may carry an anti-friction roller r. The valve M. has a central perforation 7c, and is formed with a collar or spider n, from which it is loosely suspended to the stem N by a nut or collar s, and the lower end of the stem is made to fit into the perforation in the valve and close the same when the stem is down.
My present device is designed to accomplish the same object as the device embraced by my application filed August 10, 1887, Serial No. 246,637, and its operation is as follows: Vhen plunger D2 starts on its travel in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 1, the valve M is closed by the pressure above it and the fluid is sucked bypiston D as the plunger advances into the pump through chambers E and F and port e on the left side, (ehamberE leading from the suction-pipe of the pump,) andthe fluid is forced out of chamber B into outlet-chamber l) through the valves R by the piston until the highest part of cam-plate l? begins to lift upon its yoke O. This first lifts stem N and starts communication between pipes I and J, and then as the plunger further advances the yoke is entirely lifted and the valve M full opened, producing equilibrium before and behind the piston, so that for the rest of its stroke the plunger will eX- pel a quantity of uid equal only to the mere displacement of that portion of it that enters the pump after the valve M is lifted. Equilibrium continues during the latter part of the forward stroke just described, .and the displacement of the plunger will continue to expel fluid in amount equal to its entering bulk. On the return or backward stroke of the plunger D2 equilibrium will continue and suction will be produced in this side of the shell by the withdrawal of the plunger; but just as soon as the plunger begins another forward stroke a vacuum is formed behind the piston and iiuid is drawn through valves g from chamber E, and the Huid in chamber B is forced out through valves R into the outlet-chamber l), the pressure of the iiuid in chamber B keeping valve M closed until the cam-plates begin to act. As the two plungers D and D2 alternate With each other, it is 0bvious that while during the first part of a stroke one is forcing the other is displacing or, rather, creating a vacuum by its own dis- IOO placement, and that during rthe latter part of the stroke both are merely displacing. The forcing action occurs during the first part of the stroke of the steam-piston when it is acted upon by steam under pressure; but the displacement occurs when the steam-piston is acted upon by the mere expansive force of the steam.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a double-acting steam-pump, the com bination, with a single outlet-chamber, of two main chambers entirely separated from each other and communicating with said single outlet-chamber through suitable valves, a cylinder communicating with each main chamber, and an inlet-chamber communicating with each cylinder through suitable valves, ports connecting the ends of each cylinder with each other independent and exterorly, connected plungers, and means connected with the plungers for opening and closing the ports ot each cylinder at predetermined points in the travel of the plungers, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in 'a double acting pump, of cylinders formed in independent separate main chambers communicating with a single outlet-chamber and ports connecting have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of` two witnesses.
