` IMPROVEMENT `IN LAMP-SHADE HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,397, dated July 5, 1864.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, JAMES FALLows, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Shade Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specieation, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the said improved holder, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same, like letters of reference indicating the same parts when shown in both iigures.

The object of my improvement is to afford greater facility in attaching and detachin g the paper shade, and thus also providing for readily turning round and readjusting the same in the crown of' the holder without any risk of breakage in the metal, as occasion may require. The nature of my invention consists in so constructing and applying the springs that they will serve the double purpose of claspin g the paper shade securely and detachably in the crown andof holding the whole together properly upon the chimney of the lamp, substantially as hereinafter described and set forth.

In the drawings, A is the crown, and e az a3 the springs, the two together constituting the improved holder. The crown A is simply a ring of thin sheet-brass, struck up substantially into the form shown in Fig. l, and maybe made either plain or ornamented. The springs a are also made of sheet-brass of a harder nature, cut and bent substantially in the form shown in the drawings, and attached firmly to the crown A by means of a rivet, 1, which passes through the latter and the lower end ot' the shorter arm 2 of the spring. A similar rivet, 3, binds the two arms of the springs each more securely together at their upper ends. The metal of the springs a is condensed or made of a springy nature in the usual manner well known to the trade, and three of them should be applied to each crown,

at equal distances apart from each other, as seen in Fig. l.

The operation of my improvement will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2, in which the faint lines b indicate the paper shade and the faint lines c the glass chimney of a lamp. By pressing with ones thumb and ngers the lowerendsof thelonger arms '4 4 4 oi the springs toward each other, as indicated by the dotted lilies, an ample space will be produced between each and the inner side of the crown A, when, by inserting the upper edge of the paper shade b and then letting go the springs, the latter will clasp and hold the shade firmly against the said crown, and when thus together placed upon the chimney c the weight of the whole will add to the clasping pressure of the springs on the shade.

It will be readily seen that the facility for attaching and detaching the paper shade is greatly increased over the old modes, besides avoidin g the breakage ot' the metal which attends the rebending of the clips heretofore used, and that the said shades can be readily turned round or readjusted in the crown at pleasure-a matter ot' considerable economical importance, as Jthe heat conducted from the chimney by the'springs in all holders is sometimes so great as to char or burn away the shade at the points ofeontact.

Having thus fully described my improvement and pointed out its superior utility," what I claim as new therein ot' my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
