Invent 0 n WM 3 flaw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV ADOLPH ONOKEN, OF FRANKENTHAL, BAVARIA, GERMANY.
FURNACE OR APPLIANCE FOR BURNING OR DRYING BARRELS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,876, dated August 5,1890. Application filed March 28, 1890. Serial No. 345,724. (No model.) Patented in England October 18, 1888, No. 15,005-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV ADOLPH ONCKEN, a citizen of the United States of America, temporarily residing at Frankenthal, in the Kingdom of Bavaria and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces and Appliances for Burning or Drying Barrels or Gasks,
'(for which I have secured Letters Patent in exposing the same gradually to higher tern peratures in order to prevent the wood from becoming chinky, as will often happen by the methods hitherto employed. I'attain this object by the mechanism and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying draw-' ings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, partly in Vertical section, of afurnace and its appliances to dry the casks or barrels drawn in at the chines and preliminarily hooped.
Similar lettersrefer to sim ilar parts throughout the several views.
A is a furnace from which the gases of combustion generated by the fuel upon the grate a, or dried heated air, are drawn through a number of barrels or casks 1), arranged end to end one after the other, by means of an exhauster D, placed atthe end of a support B, carrying the barrels, the so-arranged barrels or casks forming a continuous tube through which the hot gases are drawn under intermediation of the funnel O, kept in place by the side beams c of the supports B,whereby the barrels are successively driedfrom inside. WVith this support I preferably combine a device for conveying the casks, consisting of an endless belt (Z, which is guided by rollers e, journaled in the jacks f and actuated by the hand-wheel g. 011 turning I the latter all the barrels, which are guided between the side beams c c, are caused to travel toward the furnace A, after the barrel next to the latter is removed, and instead of which a newly-hooped barrel is placed at the other end of the support B, in front of the funnel C, so that a continuous draft of hot air and drying of the casks is effected.
The furnace A is provided with a chimney A for the escape of the gases of combustion developed from the fuel on the grate when first lighted, whereas during the drying process of the barrels atmospheric air is admitted through the upright adjustable grate d, to pass the glowing fuel on the grate in order to be conducted in a dry and heated state through the series of barrels on the support B, under the act-ion of the exhauster D. By this arrangement the barrels or casks are dried, but only slowly, however they become exposed gradually to higher temperatures, so
that not only are the gases of combustion ad- 'vantageously utilized, but the barrels will not become chinky or need any further burning, but are now ready to have the heads put on after the crozing and chamfering are performed and to be finally hooped in the usual way.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a furnace, an exhauster, and a carrier located between said furnace and exhauster for carrying barrels or casks end to end to form a continuous tube for conducting the gases of combustion and hot air from the furnace to the exhauster, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a furnace, an exhauster, and a carrier located between said furnace and exhauster, and an endless belt for conveying barrels orcasks placed end to end simultaneously toward the furnace, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 8th day of March;
GUSTAV ADOLPH ONOKEN. Witnesses:
HEINRICH HAJMANNY, ROBERT GRoPY.
