SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'latent No. 433,685, dated August 5, 1890. Application filed August 29, 1889. Serial No.322,350. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EZRA F, LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster', in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of gage-cocks in which a revoluble valve-seat having removably attached thereto a suitable washer or packing substance is so arranged that a fresh valve face or surface may be brought at pleasure to apply to the outlet orifice or nozzle of the cock-stem attached in the usual manner to the boiler in connection with which it is to be used.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective gage-cock that is simplein construetion, easy in operation, and in which only the packing washer or disk will have to be removed should it become leaky from use.
I attain the purposes of my invention by the mechanism and devices illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, similar letters referring to similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a side view of my gage-cock, the handle with the valve-seat thrown up, showing the parts in their relative positions; Fig.. 2, a top view of the same closed; Fig. 3, a longitudinal sect-ion through the line oc in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a full cross-section through the line y y in Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a face view of the conical valveseat, showing retaining-pins and one-half of the removable valve-surface in place; Fig. 46, an outside view of the conical compressing hood or cap, showing the square head of the clamping-bolt in place; Fig. 7, a view of Fig. 6 reversed; Fig. 8, alongitudinal vertical section of my gage-cock, having a circular or Hat valve-seat; Fig. 9, a face view of the circular valve-seat, showing retainingpins and half of the removable valve-surface in place; and Fig. l0, a view showing both faces of one-half of the circular compressingdisk.
A represents a metallic handle of sufticient weight, ovoid in form, having at its small end, integral therewith, the frustum of a right cone, the con veX surface of which, provided with retaining-pins a, forms my conical valve-seat A on which a thickness of a suitable packing substance, retained in place by the pins ct, constitutes my removable valve face or surface B, Figs. l, 2, 3, and 5. Fitted to this valve-surface B isa compressing hood or cap C, having a rectangular side opening c, provided with perpendicular walls c and an outwardly-curving portion c2. The fiattened center, having an orifice c3, is provided with two projecting ears or lugs c, forlninga jaw for pivoting to the cock--stem, as will be hereinafter described, Figs. 6 and 7.
D is a cock-stem, threaded at the end, attached in the usual manner to the boiler, pro` vided with an angular shoulder for turning, and upwardly-projecting ears or lugs (l, forming a jaw for pivoting with the lugs c4, before described, and having at its forward end a downwardly-sloping face CZ', provided with the usual bos's and orifice for the passage of steam or Water from the boiler. Along the upper edge of this face, curving forward, is a proj ection forming a downwardly-acting deflector d2, said face d along the lower edge extending some distance beyond the bottom p of the cock-stern D.
A clamping-bolt E, square-headed at one and threaded at the other end, provided with a button-screw e, serves to hold the parts A, B, and C, as described, together, keeping them in place, the whole forming ahand-lever G, which in turn is pivoted to the cock-stem D by means of a pin F passing through the lugs c4 and d before described, Figs. 2 and 4.
A gage-cock embodying the elements of my invention is also illustrated in Figs. 8, 9, and lO, in which the handle A is provided with a circular and iiat valve-seat having the retaining-pins a, supporting a circular disk of packing substance forming the removable valvesurface B. Fitted thereto is a circular and flat compressing-disk having the rectangular side opening c, provided with the walls c andthe curved portion c2, the central orifice c3, and the projecting ears or lugs c4, all held together by the square-headed clamping-bolt E by means of the button-screw c on the threaded end, pivoted by the pin F through the lugs c4 to the lugs CZ, projecting upward from the body of the cock-.stem D, having at its for- IOO ward end a perpendicular face provided with a boss and orifice for the passage of steam or water, and along its upper edge the curving projection forming the downwardly-aeting defiector cl2, and the lower edge of said face extending some distance beyond the bottom of the cock-stem D, all as described in the former construction of my gage-cock.
It will be readily seen that by turning the handle A on the bolt E as many different valve-faces may be applied to the outlet-orifice as the diameter of said orifice will be contained times in the circumference of the circle of revolution through the center thereof also, when the whole valve-surface is worn out the packing substance may be removed and a new one put in place. Again, that the side opening c, provided with the perpendicular walls c' and the curved portion c2, inclosing the outlet end of the cock-stem, forms 'a passage-way that will prevent the spraying of water or steam as it issues from the orifice,
but conduct it downward in its course.
I am aware that gage-cocks having weighted handles pivoted or hooked in place and provided with means to replace worn-out valvefaces have been made. I therefore do not claim this invention broadly; but

In a gage-cock, the cock-stem D, possessing the following elements: the threaded end for attaching to the boiler, the angular shoulder for turning said cock-stein, the projecting perpendicular lugs CZ forl pivoting thereto the weighted handle, the forward end provided with the face d', having the boss and orifice for the passage of steam or water, the upper edge of said face provided with the dgwnwardly-acting detlector d2, and the lower edge extending below the base of said cock-stem, substantially as and for the purpose described. 2. In a gage-cock, the compressing hood or disk C, possessing the following distinct fu nctional elements: the side opening c, provided with the perpendicular walls c' and the curved portion c2, adapted to operate in conjunction with the defiector cl2, as described, to prevent the upward passage of steam or water, the central orifice c3 to receive the action of the clamping-bolt E, as described, adapting said hood or disk C to compress the packing substance'or valve-face B closely to the valveseat, as described, and the perpendicular lugs c4 for pivoting to the lugs d, as described, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3. The combination, in a gage-cock, of the weighted handle A integral therewith, the valve-seat A', provided with the retainingpins a, the removable valve-face B, placed thereon to receive the action of the compressing hood or disk C, as described, the combination adapted to turn axially in said hood or disk on the clamping-bolt E, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in a gage-cock, of the handle A integral therewith, the valve-seat A', provided with the retaining-pins a, the removable valve-face B, of packing substance, placed thereon, with the compressing hood or disk C, as described, adapted to compress said packing substance or valve-face B smoothly to said valve-seat A' by means of the clamping-bolt E and button-screw c, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, in a gage-cock, of the axiallyrevoluble handle A integral therewith, the valve-seat A', provided with the retaining-pins a, placed thereon, the packing substance forming the removable valve-face B, fitted thereto, the compressing hood or disk C, having the side opening c provided with the perpendicular walls c', and the curved portion Chaving also the central orifice c3 to receive the clamping-bolt E, and the perpendicular lugs c4 for pivoting to the lugs d, as described, with the clamping-bolt E, angularheaded at one end, the other end threaded and provided with the button-screw e, the said bolt adapted to clamp the parts together, holding them in place and forming the handlever G, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, in a gage-cock, of the hand-lever G, composed ofy the following elements: the aXially-revoluble handle A integral therewith, the valve-seat A', provided with the retaining-pins a, supporting theremovable valve-surface B, fitted thereto, the compressing hood or disk C, provided with the side opening c, having the perpendicular walls c', and the curved portion c2, acting in conjunction with the defiector d2, as described, also provided with the central orifice c3 to receive the bolt E, and the perpendicular lugs c4 for pivoting with the clamping-bolt E, angular-headed at one end and threaded at the other end and provided with the button-screw e, and the cock-stem D, provided with the threaded end for attaching to the boiler, the angular shoulder for turning said cock-stem, the perpendicular lugs d for pivoting and at the forward end provided with the face d', as described, having the boss and orifice for the passage of steam or water, said face having at the upper edge the downwardly-acting defiector d2 and the lower edge of said face extending beyond the bottom of the cock-stem D, the cock-stem D and the hand-lever G, both, as described, joined together by pivoting by means of the pin F passing through the lugs c4 and d, respectively attached to each, all substantially as specified, and for the purpose 'described and c set forth.
