SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,292, dated July 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, MORGAN E. LASHER, of Champaign, in the county of Ghampaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slicing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved cutter or slicer for meats, &c. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, showing the automatic feed devices. Fig. 3 is a front face view of the cutter-disk. Fig. 4 is a rear face view thereof. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through said disk on line .90 00, Fig. 4.
This invention is an improvement in inachines for cutting or slicing meats, vegetables, &c.; and its objects are to feed the articles operated upon up to the knives or cutters regularly and equally and positively, (but not by a force-feed, so that in case the knife should fail to cut at one operation there would not be an increased pressure of material thereagainst at the next operation, which is the case where the material is fed up by positive mechanical deviccssuch as screws or racks,) and to improve the devices for regulating the depth or thickness of the cuts or slices made by the knives; and to these ends the invention consists in a novel adjustable weightactuated followenplate, which presses the material forward to the knives, and in the improved construction of the cutting-disk and adjustable plates or guides thereon, which regulate the movement of the material pressed forward by the follower and thickness of slices cut therefrom, as hereinafter clearlydescribed and claimed.
In the drawings, letter A represents a box or trough forming the body of the machine and mounted on suitable supporting-legs in a horizontal position. The sides of this box are notched or serrated on their upper edges, as at or ct, the serrations extending from the rear of the box nearly to the front thereof. The sides may also have longitudinal grooves l) in their inner faces near the top, as shown, and in these grooves slides a plate 0, the front edge of which is bent downward to form or is connected to a follower O, filling the space between the walls of the box, but moving freely therebetwveen, and supported and operated by plate 0.
D designates a lever, one end of which is pivotally connected to an ear (Z, rising centrally from plate 0, the lever extending backward therefrom, and at a point near card lever D is pivotally connected to or fulcrumed upon a bracket arm orarms e, projecting from the bar 13, which lies transversely of box A and rests in a pair of opposite notches a a of the box sides, as shown.
On the end of lever D, which projects past and over bar B, is a weight F, preferably adjustably secured thereon. By lifting the weighted end of lever D bar B is rocked and plate 0 and the follower are drawn back toward the bar. The material to be operated upon is then placed in the box in front of the follower and the lever released. The connections 6 (Z between the lever, bar B, and plate 0 form a kind of toggle-joint, which is closed when the weighted end of the lever is raised, as shown in full lines, Fig. 2; but when this end is released the weight tends to depress the lever and consequently distend the toggle-joint, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and as 13 binds in the notches a a the plate 0 must yield, if anything; hence it is forced forward away from bar B and with it the follower, which crowds the material before it toward the cutters at the front end of the box with a pressure regulated by the weight on lever D, or the position of this weight on said lever, which,if set closer to or farther from plate 0 011 lover I), will diminish or increase the pressure upon the follower. As the material gradually moves forward the box-lever D is raised and bar 3 slipped forward into notches nearer the front end of the box, so that the follower-plate can be always properly actuated by the weighted lever. Gdesignates a stub-shaft or journal rigidly mounted in the front end and one side of the box, above the bottom thereof, as shown, and H designates the cutter-disk mounted on said journal and of such diameter that it closes the front end of the box, its inner face running closely against the end of the box, as
shown. This disk is cast with two or more openings 72. h in it, each extending over nearly one-fourth of its surface from the hub to the rim. The rear edges of these openings, or the edges in which the cutter-knives are mounted, are curved on the arc of a large convolute springing from the axis of the wheel, about as shown at h, and the inner face of the wheel is recessed atz' ialong these rear edges of the openings, and in these recesses are secured knives I I, that are crescent-shaped or curved, as shown, and extend from points a little to one side of a diametrical line through the hub of the disk, toward the rim thereof. The ends of the knives thus overreach or pass each other, and when the disk is revolved the knives first begin cutting on the material at the upper corner of the box opposite the j ournal of the hub and cut downward and inward through the material, finishing the cut at the corner of the box below the journal. The knives thus have a draw-cut, and the greatest leverage is given to the knife at the point where the resistance of the material would be naturally greatest-that is, below and near the journal or hub of the disk. The edges of the opening opposite the knives are beveled on the outer face of the disk to permit the sliced material to'readily escape therefrom.
J designates a sleeve of such bore that it will fit over the elongated hub or disk H, upon which it is adj ustably mounted and secured by a set-screwy, as shown. From this sleeve project lateral diametrically-opposite wings or plates K K, cast with the sleeve, and which correspond in contour to the openings h h in disk H and enter said openings and very nearly fill the same. knives I I lie flush with the inner face of disk H. The wings K K can be set with their inner faces flush, or nearly so, with the inner face of the disk H, or outward from or below the face of the disk, and these wings are thus used to regulate the thickness of the cuts or slices made by the knives, since the material in the box is fed up against the faces of said wings before and during the action of the knives. By this simple means the cuts are regulated without iuterferel'lce with or adjustment of the knives, which are set in one position. By removing wings K K the knives can be sharpened by filing without removing from the disk, or the knives can be removed and sharpened. The follower G can move up against the face of the disk without injury to the knives, which are flush therewith; and hence every particle of material in the box can be sliced or minced, whether it be large or small, green or cured. The disk H may be operated by a crank L or by power applied to the hub thereof, as is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
1. all substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described cutting-machine, consisting of a box having its sides serrated, the adjustable bar engaging said serratibns, and the follower and weighted lever connected to said follower and to an arm projecting from said bar, and the cutting-disk and devices for regulating the thickness of cuts, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4. The combination, with the box, the fol lower therein, and the actuating devices for the follower, substantially as described, of the cutting-disk mounted on a stationary journal or stub-shaft at the front end of the box and provided with opposite openings extending from the hub to the periphery of the disk and curved, with the curved knives secured in recesses in the face of the disk at one edge of the respective openings and having their inner ends projecting, respectively, beyond the center of the disk, a sleeve adjust-ably mounted on the hub of said disk and rotating therewith, and provided with wings corresponding to the openings of the disk, for the purpose and substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the box, the follower therein, and the stub shaft at the front end of the box, of the disk journaled on said shaft and having diametrically-opposite openings in it extending from center to pcriphery, segmental in contour and having one edge curved on an arc concentric to the hub of the disk, curved knives fitted in recesses in the curved edges of the disk-openings, and the adjustable wings projecting from a sleeve adjustably secured on the hub of the disk, said wings corresponding to the openings of the disk in contour and adapted to regulate the thickness of cuts, the knives being so arranged that their inner ends overreach each other, whereby a clean cut is made the entire thickness of the material and, owing to their curved form, the material is gathered toward the hub of the disk and given ashea'r out, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
