SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,973, dated July 29, 1890. Application filed April 17, 1890- Serial No. 348,305. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO J BREWE of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Galvanic Batteries, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to an improvement in galvanic batteries, and has special reference to the structure of the cover, by means of which the elements can be supported in the jar. Bysubstituting one part in the cover jars of different depths can be accommodated to the same elements.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan; Fig. 2, a vertical section through Fig. 1 on the line a: as; Fig. 3, the same view as Fig. 2, showinga metallic cover-support of a different height; Fig. 4, a view of a modification of the cover; and Fig. 5, a section through the line y y, Fig. 4-, looking upward.
A represents the jar, which may be of any suitable size or material. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, this jar is provided with a coversupport D, of any suitable material, (though generally of met-ah) which supports the battery-cover proper E, in which the negative element B is suspended. The cover E is made of some insulating material, by preference vitreous. The zinc C is suspended by nut or washer H in the cover-support D. The cover is provided with a draining-lip G, with vertically-inclined sides, surrounding the carbon B, for the purpose hereinafter to be described. The carbon or other electro-negative element 13 is suspended by means of plates or washers F F, attached thereto by set-screw K, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. By preference the carbon has inclined or conical sides fitting in the cover, as clearly shown. When the carbon is placed in the cover and the Washers fastened, the whole forms a solid structure. Instead of having a single drip-lip G, two or more may be employed, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which one lip G surrounds the cover, another G the zinc, and a third G the carbon. The purpose of'these lips is to enable the moisture which may lodge or condense on the under side of the cover to drip and fall away from the edges of these lips, thereby preventing short-circuiting of the elements under the cover. By the variable height of the coversupport D it is obvious that a shorter jar A, Fig. 3, may be used to contain the same elements as the longer jar A, Fig. 2. Any suitable liquid L may be employed.
VVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A battery-cover consisting of two separable pieces, one a removable central piece of insulating material supporting one element, and the other a rim of conducting material forming a support for the removable central piece and for the other element,substantially as described.
2. A battery-cover consisting of an external annular conducting-body fitting the neck of the jar and carrying the positive element, and a central vitreous portion supported by the annular portion and supporting the negative element, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A battery-cover provided'with drip-lips on its under side, the said lips having a laterally-inclined side or sides, the sides meeting in a dripping-edge, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a battery-carbon, a cover through which the carbon passes, and a washer or washers attached to the carbon and supporting the same in the cover, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a battery-cover having an annular drip-lip separately surround ing one of the elements, substantially as described.
6. A battery-cover having circular driplips surrounding both of the elements, substantially as described.
7. A battery-cover provided with a drip lip or lips on its under surface having laterally-inclined sides, the said lips being out of contact with the elements of the battery, substantially as described.
