J. H. SOHOLDING. v FIRE BXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
Patented July 22,1890.
I uvv NTOH & zd pu y' A UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. SCHOLDING, OF YONKERS, NEVVYORK.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 432,906, dated July 22, 1890. Application filed March 31, 1890. Serial No. 346,032- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SCHOLDING, of Yonkers, in the county of W'estchester and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in firc-extinguishing apparatus; and the object of my invention is to combine this device 1with a useful and ornamental article of furniure.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device with the door of the case open, and Fig. 2 avertical cross-section on the line new of Fig. 1 with the hose uncoiled and the water turned on.
I have shown the case A as designed for a hat-tree, it having suitable hooks a for hats and clothing, but it may be made in any suitable design. The case is intended to be built into the wall of the building and preferably into the side of a hall. Itis provided with a door B, which swings outwardly, as shown, and with an inner chamber C.
Projecting into the chamber G from the interior of the wall is a water-pipe D, which terminates in a suitable cock D, to which is pivotally coupled, so as to swing vertically, the pipe E. The pipe E is coupled to the cock D in such a manner that when the pipe E is swung into a vertical position it will close the cock D, and when the pipe E is swung into a horizontal position it will open the cock D and produce a flow of water through the pipe E.
Coupled to the end of the pipe E is a hose F, which should be long enough to reach to any part of the building in which the apparatus is located, and which is provided with a suitable nozzle F ,which preferably contains some fireextinguishing chemicals. WVhen not in use, the hose is coiled within the charm ber C, and in order that it may not fall out when the door is opened the rear wall of the chamber is provided with rearwardly inclined strips 6, which are fixed vertically to the inner wall of the chamber (J, with the thickest part at the bottom, so that the coiled hose will leanagainst the strips and thus be tilted backwardly against the wall. The 1102- zle F rests at one end upon the coiled hose, and the other end is engaged by a hook (I, which projects from the rear wall of the chamber O. I
Fixed to the rear wall of the chamber G and to the hose-pipe is a chain e, which prevents the pipe from dropping below a horizontal position. Fixed in the chamber 0 below the cock D is a spout f, which terminates at its lowest extremity in a waste-pipe g, so that any water that may drip from the cock will be carried away without .injury to the hat-tree or case A. An ax H is suspended upon a hook within the chamber 0, so that it may be conveniently reached, if necessary.
When the door 13 is closed, the device is used as an ordinary hat-tree, and in case of fire its action will be automatic, as the operator has simply to open the door and pull out the hose and the device will be at work, as the strain upon the hose in the act of stretching the same will bring down the pipe E and turn on the water. This automatic action of the apparatus is an important feature, as the device may be set in operation by one person, who has only to grasp the hosepipe F and run with it to the place of the fire. The act of stretching the hose will turn on the water, rendering it unnecessary to lose time in returning to move the cock for that purpose. The importance of being able instantly to apply the water will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fire-extinguishing apparatus consisting, essentially, of a case having rearwardlyinclined vertical strips fixed in the back thereof, a water-pipe projecting into the case and provided with a suitable cock, a water-conducting pipe coupled to the cock so as to actuate the same, and a hose coupled to said conducting-pipe and adapted to be folded within the case, substantially as described.
2. A fire-extinguishing apparatus consisting, essentially, of a case A, a water-pipe D, projecting into the case and provided with a Cook, the pipe E, conpled'to the cock so as to swin g vertically and actuate the same, a chain 6, supporting the pipe E, the hose F, coupled to the pipe E and provided with a suitable Io nozzle, the waste-spout f and pipe g, arranged below the water-cock, and means, as strips 1), for retaining the hose in the case, substantially as described.
