.VARIABLE EXHAUST FOR LOCUMOTIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,704, dated July 22, 1890.
Application filed March 20, 1890- Serial No. 344,604. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID HANNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turner, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Variable Exhaust for L0- comotives, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device whereby the area of the exhaust-passage of a steam-engine may be varied, as will be hereinafter set forth.
The object is to provide a simple and convcnient device of this character, which will be easy of manipulation and so constructed as not to be liable to become clogged and the Working parts stuck.
Figure 1 is a broken-away vertical longitudinal section of the front end of a locomotive-boiler, showing the relative position of my improved device; Fig. 2, a horizontal sec tion in plane 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a vertical section in plane 3, Fig. 3.

The cap B is provided in the upper part and on opposite sides with the segment openings or ports a a (see Figs. 2 and 3,) in which are seated the movable valve members 0 C, the inner adjacent edges a a of which are curved out to correspond with the exhaustpassage and beveled, as at a, to contract the passage in an upward direction, as shown in Fig. 3.

These valve parts are provided on their respective outer edges with the bifurcated lugs b b,in which are inserted the respective inner ends of the angularor bellcrank levers D D, and secured thereto by the pivot-pin b. The outer ends of these levers and the flattened end of the socket-piece d are secured together by the pivot-pin cl. The arms E E are formed on the cap B, and supportthe bell-crank levers D D at their central points, the pivot-pins d d tor-min g the f ulcrum-bearing on which said levers rock in the operation of imparting the required lateral movement to valve members 0 G. The rod oroperatinghandle F is inserted in the socket-piece d and leads into the engine-cab, from which the device may be conveniently controlled by the engineer. The apertures or holes in the joining ends of the angle-levers D D and the socket-piece d, through which the connecting pivot-pin d is inserted, are somewhat enlarged or widened, so as to provide for a free movement of these parts. By this arrangement the area of the exhaust-passage may be varied as the working of the engines may require in relieving the cylinders and fines of any undue strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a variable exhaust, the combination, with the exhaust-pipe, of the tubular cap having ports or openings therein, the valve members movably inserted in said openings, the angular levers pivoted at their inner ends to said valve members, the arms in which said levers are fulcrumed, and the socket-piece and operating-rod connecting the outer ends of said levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
