Description
' J. H. QUICK;
Thrashing Machine No. 43,262. Patented June .21. 1864.
ZZZZ%.
UNITED STATES PATENT OrFIcE.
J. H. QUICK, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORTO H. R. WITHINGTON AND JOHN BUTTERWORTH, JR., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THRASHING AND GRAIN-SEPARATING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,26), dated June 21, 1804.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. H. QUICK, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful I-mprovement in Dusters for Threshing and Grain-Separating Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of the thrashing-machine with my improvement applied to it; Fig.2, a detached perspective view of the draftbox pertaining to my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to anew and improved duster attachment for thrashing and grainseparating machines, for the purpose of preventing dust being expelled or ejected from the thrashingmachine into the iaces of the operators or attendants.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a draft-box provided with a pendent guard or apron, and applied to the machine in such relation with the thrashing cylinder as to efl'ectually carry the dust through the machine.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body of a thrashing-machine, which may be constructed in the usual way, and B is a box formed with a circuitous passage, of which a is the outer orifice, and b the inner one, as shown in Fig. 2.
G is the thrashing-cylinder, which is fitted in the front part of the machine in the usual way, and the draft-box B is placed on the front part of the machine, so that its outer orifice, a, will be over the thrashingcylinder (J, and its inner orifice, I), back of the same, as will be understood by referring to Fig. it.
At the outer end of the draft-box B there is attached, by a joint or hinge, a pendent guard or apron, D, which extends down within a short distance of the feed-b0ardl E of the machine.
When the thrashing'machine is in operation, the dust produced by the rotation of the thrashing-cylinder 0, instead of being expelled from the feed end of the machine and annoying the operators or attendants, is drawn off through the box B in the direction indicated by the dotted arrows, in consequence of the current formed or produced in said box by the rotation of the thrashing-cylinder, the dust being carried into the body of the machine, and discharged therefrom, with the chaif, straw, &c.
The pendent guard or apron D prevents the escape of dust from the orifice a, directing it upward into the box B.
I am aware that thrashing-machines have been provided heretofore with a separate airpassage over the cylinder, and therefore I do not claim such broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The air-passage, contracted in its central portion, in combination with the pendent guard or apron D, constructed and operating as set forth.
J. H. QUICK.
