UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. ZIEBARTII, JR, AND FREDERICK C. scI-IADEWALD, oF ossEo, MINNESOTA.
DOUBLE-ACTING FORCE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,960, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed March 19, 1890. Serial No. 344,517. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. ZIEBARTH, J r., and FREDERICK G. SCHADEWALD, citizens of the United States, residing at Osseo, in the county of I-Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Force-Pumps; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to pumps which have two plungers in a single barrel, the plungers operating alternately in opposite directions to effect a continuous and steady flow of water from the discharge-spout.
The purpose of the invention is to devise means for operating the plungers simultaneously from a single lever or handle and provide means for readily adjusting the length of the stroke of. the said plungers.
Another object of the invention is to facilitate the lengthening and shortening of the coupling-rod to adapt the pump for wells of varying depth, whereby a section can be removed or inserted in the length of rod with dispatch and convenience.
A further object of the invention is to obtain a tight joint in the upper plunger, between it and the rod which is connected with and operates the lower plunger.
.The improvements consist of the novel features and in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, parts being broken away, of a pump embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the standard, showing the relative arrangement of the coupling-rods and the connections betweenthe coupling-rods and the lever or handle. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the stroke-ad j uster. Fig. at is a detail view of the coupling-rod joint. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the upper plunger.
The pump stock or barrel A is of ordinary construction and suitable size and length, being provided at its lower end with the usual check-valve (not shown) and closed at its upper end, which end has openings for the passage of the plunger-rods B and C.
- D is the discharge-spout, which connects with the pump stock or barrel a short distance below the platform or well-covering E, and which is provided with a four-way cock (I at the junction of the vertical and horizontal portions thereof, said cock being operated by rod (1, which extends through the discharge-spout and terminates in the handle (1 F and G are the two plungers. The lower plunger G is of ordinary construction. The upper plunger F has a tubular portion f, through which the plunger or coupling-rod B passes, a tight joint being obtained at each end of the tubular portion f bya conical-ended nut f and the conical end of the rod O,which is secured into the upper end of the said tubular portion f, the nut f being secured into the lower portion of the tubular portion f.
H is the pump head or standard having rear lugs h and h and projections 71, and h on its front side, which have openings to re ceive the coupling or plunger rods and guide them in their movements. the rod B passes through a bracket h"= at the top of the standard. The lever or handle I is connected with the rod B and with the standard or pump head by swinging link J and the head K, the link being connected with the lug h. The handle passes through an opening in the head K, and the latter is clamped on the handle by the two oppositelyinclined blocks 7.: and 70, which are placed in the opening in the head, and the clampingscrew 70 which draws the blocks together, wedging them in the said opening and clamping the lever therein at the proper place. The elbow or bell-crank lever L is connected with the lug hfi by swinging link Z. The link M connects the vertical member of the said lever L with the rod 0 at a point in close proximity to the connection of the lever ll therewith. The horizontal member of the elbowlever L is connected directly with the rod B.
The operation of the invention is as follows: \Vhen depressing the outer end of lever 1, its
The upper end of IOO inner end will be elevated, carrying rod B and plunger F upward. At the same time the link M will be moved up and draw the vertical member of lever L in or toward the pump -head, thereby efiecting a downward movement of the horizontal member of the said lever L, the plunger-rod O, and the plunger G. On operating the lever in the opposite direction the reverse of the movements just described takes place, as will be readily comprehended.
The coupling-rods are made in sections and the following means are provided to couple the sections together. One section is supplied with a raised portion N, which is undercut at each end and which is provided with extension n at one end. The other section has a corresponding recess 0 to receive projection Nand notch 0 for the insertion of the extension 71. The raised portion N is shorter than the recesss O, and a wedge P is driven in the space between the end of the recess and the end of the raised port-ion.
WVe claim- 1. The combination, with the pump-head and the two rods B and C, of the lever I, ap-
the elbow of lever L with the lug on the pump- 3 head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A coupling-rod made in sections, one section having a raised portion N, which is undercut at its ends and having extension at at one end, the other section having recess 0, with corresponding undercut edges and notch 0 in one end, and the wedge P, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
