DISCHARGE-GATE FOR. MIXING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,798, dated July 8, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON BROUGHTON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Discharge-Gates for Mixing Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to mechanisms .for operating the gates of the discharge-ports of apparatus containing pulverulent substances, and has more particularly reference to the machine for mixing mineral compounds, for which I have obtained United States Letters Patent No. 402,393, dated April 30, 1889.
The object of .my present invention is to provide more eflicient and more convenient means for opening and closing the discharge.- ports of the troughs containing the mixed minerals; and to that end it consists, essentially, in the combination,with the trough having a discharge-port extending lengthwise of the bottom thereof and provided with a valveseat surrounding said port, of a gate sliding on said seat, guides beneath the valve-seat and crosswise thereof, and rollers running in the guides and supporting the gate.
The invention also consists in certain auxiliary devices connected with the aforesaid parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an end view of that portion of the machine to which my invention is applied. ,Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View of the gate-operating mechanisms. A A represent the troughs in which the mineral compound is mixed, said troughs being each provided at its bottom with an elongated discharge-port a, extending lengthwise of the trough, and on the exterior of the trough is a smooth horizontal valve-seat h b, surrounding the port.
Underneath the troughs AA are two stout horizontal bars B B, disposed crosswise of and preferably at right angles to the troughs and rigidly secured at opposite ends to the main supporting-frame F of the machine. On each of said stationary bars it B are mounted two sets of rollers ff, arranged, respectively, under the ports a a and disposed withtheir planes vertically and parallel with the bars.
Upon each set ofrollers ff rides a guide-bar g, which is preferably grooved longitudinally in its under side for, allowing the rollers to 'run therein, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The guide-bars g g are rigidly attached to or formed integral with the gates h h, which slide transversely on the aforesaid valve-seats b b, said gates extending the entire lengths of the ports a a and being each braced or stiffened by a verticallongitudinal web b,formed on the under side of the gate, central of the width thereof. The rollers f f are so arranged as to support the gates in constant contact with the valve-seats, and in order to insure this effect I make said rollers adjustable vertically, so that they may .be raised to compensate for the wear and abrasion between the gates and valve-seats, and I for this purpose I prefer to form the crossbars B B with vertical eyes or sleeves c 0 under the ports a a, and insert in said eyes screw-threaded bolts d d, the upper protruding ends of which are bifurcated and perforated transversely. The rollers f f are inserted in the bifurcations of the bolts and are pivoted thereto by pins passing through the aforesaid transverse perforations of the bolts and through the centers of the rollers. Each of said bolts is provided with two nuts 6 e, respectively 011 the top and bottom of the bar B, and by loosening the lower nut and tightening the upper one the bolt is raised, as may be required,to raise the roller f,as aforesaid, and then by tightening the lower nut the bolt is retained in its adjusted position.
In order to allow the two gates to be operated simultaneously, I resort to the following mechanism: Underneath the troughs and central between the same is a shaft 0, extending lengthwise of the trough and parallel therewith and pivoted in boxes secured to the end plates of the supporting-frame F. To this shaft are rigidly attached two double crank-arms j j, projecting from opposite sides of the shaft, and to each of said arms is con nected a bolt 01. Similar bolts n n are hinged to ears on the gates h h or their webs l) b, and these latter bolts have their screwthreads pitched in opposite directions from those of the bolts n a, and each pair of said differently-threaded bolts n n is connected together by means of 'a right and left hand screw-threaded sleeve 19. By turning the sleeves 19 p the couplings of the gates h h with the crank-armsjj can be shortened or lengthened, as may be found necessary, to move the gates the requisite distances for opening andclosing the ports a a. One end of the shaft 0 is extended through the end of the frame F, and to the protruding end of said shaft is secured a bevel gear-wheel i. To the exterior of said end of the frame is pivoted a shaft 0 at right angles to the shaft G,and to one end of said shaft 0 is attached a bevel gearwheel Z, which meshes with the wheel i. To the opposite end of the shaft 0 is attached a hand wheel or crank 0, by which to turn said shaft, and thereby impart motion to the shaft 0, which operates the gates h h, as hereinbefore described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. lhe combination of the horizontal trough having a discharge-port extending lengthwise of the bottom thereof and provided with avalve-seat surrounding said port, a gate slidin g on said seat, guides beneath the valve-seat and crosswise thereof, and rollers running in the guides and supporting the gate, as set forth.
2. In combination with the horizontal trough, a discharge-port extending lengthwise of its bottom and provided with a valve-seat surrounding said port, vertically-disposed rollers supported under the trough and arranged in two sets, each in a line crosswise of the valve-seat, guide-bars riding on said rollers, and a gate on the guidebars sliding on the aforesaid valve-seat, as set forth.
The combination of two troughs arranged horizontally side by side andin the same horizontal plane and having discharge-ports extending lengthwise of the bottoms thereof, and horizontal valve-seats surrounding said ports, bars disposed stationary horizontally beneath the troughs and at right angles thereto, rollers mounted on said bars and disposed with their planes vertically and parallel with the stationary bars, guide-bars riding on said rollers, and gates carried on said guidebars and sliding on the aforesaid valve-seats, substantially as described and shown.
4. In combination with the troughs A A, provided with the elongated ports 66 a and valve-seats b b, the stationary horizontal bars 13 B, arranged under the troughs at right angles thereto and each formed with two sets of vertical eyes 0 0 under the respective ports a a, the bolts d d, passing through said eyes and provided with nuts 6 e on the tops and bottoms of the bars B B, the rollers ff, pivoted to said bolts and disposed with their planes vertically and parallel with the said bars, the guide-bars g g, riding on said rollers, and the gates h 71, carried on said guide-bars, and adjusted to the valve-seats by the aforesaid nuts, substantially as described and shown.
5. In combination with the troughs A A, provided with the ports a aand the rollers f f under said ports, the gates h h, formed with the longitudinal stiffening -webs b h and with the guide-bars g g at right angles to said Webs and riding on the aforesaid rollers, all constructed and combined substantially as described and shown.
6. In combination with the troughs A A, provided with the ports a a and gates h h, sliding across said ports, the shaft 0, disposed beneath the troughs parallel with and central between the same, crank-arms attached to said shaft, and coupling-arms connecting the crank-arms with the aforesaid gates, substantially as set forth. I
7. In combination with the troughs A A, provided with the ports. a a and gates h h sliding across said ports, the shaft 0. disposed beneath the troughs, parallel with and central between the same, crank-arms attached to said shaft, bolts coupled to the crank-arms, and bolts coupled to the aforesaid gates, and the latter bolts having their screw-threads pitched in opposite directions from those of the former bolts, and right-andleft screw-threaded sleeves connecting the reversely screw-threaded bolts, substantially as described and shown.
8. In combination with the frame and troughs A A, supported on said frame and provided with the ports a a and gates h h, sliding across said ports, the shaft 0, dis posed beneath the troughs, parallel with and central between the same and extending through the aforesaid supporting frame, crank-arms attached to said shaft, couplingarms connecting the crank-ar1ns with the aforesaid gates, the gear 'L' on the outerend of said shaft, the shaft 0 pivoted to the exterior of the supporting-frame, the gear Z 011 said shaft meshing with the gear a, and the hand wheel or crank 0, secured to said vertical shaft, substantially as described and shown.
