' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD W'ILLIAM MACKENZIE-HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCOMOTIVE LAMP-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,603, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed May 23, 1889. Serial No. 311,879- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE-HUGHES,ofOhicago,Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locomotive Lamp-Brackets, of which the following is a full, true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. r
This invention. relates to .an improvement in lamp-brackets for locomotives, by which their weight can be greatly reduced and a cheap and simple structure substituted for the heavy casting now employed. In making a lamp-bracket for locomotives it is essential that there shall be a bracket upon which the lamp shall rest and an attachment to said bracket by which it may be attached to the front end of the boiler. Sometimes the bracket rests entirely over the boiler and sometimes it extends beyond the front end thereof. By my improvement I make the lamp-bracket of pressed steel and at the same time in the operation of making the bracket I press from its body and integral therewith the supports by which it is to be attached to the boiler front.
In my drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation, Fig. 2 a plan View, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of my bracket when arranged to be placed over the front end of the boiler; Fig. 4, a vertical section, and Fig; 5 a plan, of my projecting lamp-bracket.
The bracket proper is shown at A, and it consists of a flat surface having legs or supports B, by which the bracket is bolted to the boiler C. In the manufacture of this bracket ablank of the proper shape is provided, which is then by suitable mechanism now well known punched and pressed out, so that the parts removed from the openings D D, Fig. 2, serve to form the Web-like supports B B, Fig. 3. The outer edge is by preference turned down to form the flange, as shown at E E, and a flange may likewise be arranged around the opening, as shown at F.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a pressedsteel 1am p-bracket for locomotives, consisting of a supporting-plate having an opening in its central portion and having legs or supports upon its under side along the edges of the opening integral with the body of the plate, each leg consisting of a portion of the plate removed from said opening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE-HUGHES.
