APPARATUS FOR CUTTING ELECTRICAL CONDUlT-PIPES.

.To' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvEsTnR P. DENISON, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Cutting Electrical Conduit-Pipes,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus for making longitudinal cuts in a continuous pipe. It is designed more es- IO pecially to be used in connection with another apparatus, upon which I have filed application for Letters Patent, for making circular or transverse cuts in a continuous pipe, the use of both apparatus enabling me to cut a section from a continuous pipe without inj urin g or disturbing anything lying therein such, for instance, as a cable of electrical conductors with which lateral or house connect-ions are to be made. The apparatus is, however, not limited to any special application.
The subject-matter claimed is hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is 2 5 a side elevation of the apparatus applied to a section of a pipe; Fig. 2, an end View of the same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
A represents the section of pipe. The cut- 0 ter-frame consists of a longitudinal bar B, having at each end and at right angles thereto cheek-pieces B, formed with curved faces fitting the side of the pipe. This frame is clamped against the pipe by two yokes 0, each 3 5 havinga curved end O, embracing the side of the pipe opposite to that on which pieces B bear, and an opposite end O extending outside of the cheek-piece B. A screw clampingbolt 0 in the end 0 works against the outer 40 side of the cheek-piece and serves to clamp the cutter-frame firmly to the pipe. A screw feed-shaftD has its bearings in the two cheekpieces B, and between the latter carries a correspondingly-threaded traveling cutterblock E, which may be moved back and forth by the rotation of the screw-shaft. Acutterhead F, sliding transversely to the screw-shaft in the socket or ways in the block E, is adjusted at right angles to the axis of the pipe by means of a screw-bolt f, working at right angles to the axis of the pipe in a flange eon the head E, and also in the end of the cutterhead F. The opposite end of the cutter-head has a sleeve F at right angles thereto, and in this sleeve a cutter-shaft G has its bearings. On the end of the shaft extending over the pipe is a toothed-cutting-wheel g, and at its opposite end g the shaft is squared to receive a key or crank for rotating it.
X indicates a cable of electrical conductors 6o lying in the pipe. The cutter-frame B B having been clamped to the pipe, the cutter g may, by means of the adjusting-bolt f, be drawn down against the pipe. The cutter may then be rotated by a key or crank applied to the end 9 of the cutter-shaft and advanced as required by turning the feed shaft D. In its movement back and forth the side of the block E merely bears against the face of the bar B.
The details of construction may be varied Without departing from the invention; but the construction shown is that which I prefer.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the cutter-frame adapted to be applied to the side of a pipe, securing devices for holding it in place, a longitudinally-traveling block E, a cutter-head F, adjustable in guides in the traveling block E, and a cutter G, having its hearings in said adjustable cutter-head.
2. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the cutter-frame adapted to be applied to the side of a pipe, securing devices for holding it in place, .the traveling block E,
a screw-shaft extending therethrough for moving itlongitudinally, acutter-head I], having a sleeve-bearing F, devices for adjusting the cutter-head in guides formed in the travo eling block E, and a cutter journaled in the sleeve F.
3. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the cutter-frame adapted to be applied to the side of a pipe, securing devices for holding it in place, a longitudinally-traveling cutter adjustable transversely to the pipe and carried by the cutter-frame, and means for rotating the cutter without moving it longitudinally relatively to the pipe.
l. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the cutter-frame, the cheek-pieces IOO interposed between the frame and the pipe, clamps for securing the frame to the sides of the pipe and adjusting the cheek-pieces, a feed-shaft having its bearings in the cheekpieces, a traveling cutter-block operated by the feed-shaft, a cutter-head carried by the cutter-block and adjustable transversely to the feed-shaft and pipe, a rotating cuttershaft carried in bearings in the cutter-head, and a cutter carried by said shaft.
5. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the yoke-frame, cheek-pieces interposed between the yoke-frame and the pipe, devices for adjusting the cheek-pieces relatively to the pipe, the cutter-block,the-cutter mounted therein, a feed-shaft, and gearing between the cutter and the feed-shaft.
6. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the frame, cheek-pieces interposed between the frame and the pipe, devices for adjusting the cheek-pieces, the cutter-block,
a screw-shaft extending through the cutterblock and having bearings in theoheek-pieces, the cutter, and means for adjusting it transversely to the screw-shaft.
