MACHINE FOR TRIMMING THE EDGES OF STRAW MAITING AND SIMILAR FABRICS,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,498, dated July 1, 1890.

To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that IsAAc LINDSLEY, deceased, late a citizen of the United States and a resident of Pawtucket, in the countyof Providenceand State of Rhode Island, did invent a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Trimming the! Edges of Straw Matting and Similar Fabrics, of which the following' is a specification.
In weaving straw matting and similar fabrics in which the filling-strips are of short lengths it is the practice to fold the end of each alternate filling-strip over the outer warp-thread and under the adjoining thread cf the warp, and the projecting ends both of the straight and the folded filling-strips have heretofore been trimmed off entirely by hand, which is a comparatively slow and tedious operation.
It is the object of this invention to provide an automatic machine for cutting off both the projecting and the folded ends of the fillin g-strips, so as to produce a properly-trimmed selvage edge; and to this end the invention consists in the improved construction of the ed ge-guides and of the cutting mechanism, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top View thereof. Fig. Lirepresents an enlarged vertical section of the reciprocating cutterhead. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged elevation of the guide for the edge of the web near the rotary cutters. Fig. 6 represents an enlarged elevation of the initial guide for the edge to be trimmed. Fig. 7 is a detail View showing a side elevation of the rotary cutters.
In the accompanying drawings, A lis the frame of the machine, and B the table over which the matting is to be fed.
C C are feeding-rollers, which serve to draw the web forward, and D is the roller upon which the trimmed web is to be wound.
E is the drivingshaft,which is held in the bearings a a and provided with the drivingpulleyE, and to the opposite end of the shaft E from the driving-pulley is attached the pulley F, from which connection is made with the pulley G upon the outer end of the shaft H by means of the belt Z9. The shaft I-I is held for rotation in the bearings c c, and is provided at the end opposite to the pulley G with the attached pinion I, which engages with the teeth of the gear I', which gear is attached to the shaft J of the lower feedingroller C, the upper feeding-roller CY being pressed against the lower feeding-rolier C by means of the adjustable weights d d, arranged upon the levers e e, the, said levers resting upon the sliding caps f f, which are placed in the bearing-slots g g for the upper roller.
Within the bearing-slots h 7L in the frame of the machine is placed the winding-up or packaging roller D, and from the pulley L upon the roller D connection is made to the pulley M upon the shaft of the lower roller C by means of the belt fi, the said belt being made slack and tightened upon the pulleys by means of the lever fa, provided with the tightening-rollerj, which is held against the surface of .the belt by means of the spiral spring k, which is secured to the outer end of the lever n and also attached to the edge of the table B at the screw-stud Z, and by raising the outer end of the lever N against the resilience of the spring 7o the belt can be loosened, so that the packaging-roller can be removed from the bearing-slots 7L h.
To a supplemental frame A at one side of the main frame A is journaled the shaft O, and upon the shaft O is attached the pulley l?, from which connection is made with the pulley Q upon the driving-shaft E by means of the belt fm, which passes under the idlerpulleys n n.
Upon the platform o is secured the rotary pressure-blower R, from which the air-pipep extends to the point q over the table E, so that a blast of air from the blower will be directed downward and across the surface of the fabric lying upon the table. The rotary blower R is driven from the pulley S upon the shaft O by means of the belt r.
Upon the forward end of the shaft O is placed the disk T, to which is attached the crank-pin s, and at the opposite side of the machine above the table B is arranged the horizontal guide-bar U, which serves to guide the reciprocating cutter-head V. The cutter-head V is provided with a groove t at its upper side, adapted to embrace the sides of the guide- IOO action of the cutters.
bar and upward from the sides of the cutter-head V extends the wire yoke u, which is rigidly attached to the cutter-head, and from the upper end of the yoke u connection is made to the upper edge of the guide-bar U' by Vmeans of the spiral spring u, and the cutter-head will be pressed downward against the fabric upon the table by the action of the spring 'u during the reciprocating movementl of the head. The knife w is attached to the cutter-head by means of the screw and clamping-piece y, and a continuous reciprocating movement is imparted to the knife over the surface of the fabric by means of the connecting-rod WV, which is loosely attached to the crank-pin s and rigidly attached to the cutter-head V.
At the edge of the web in front of the knife w is placed the block a', and over the edge of the fabric at the block a is placed the wire guide a2, as shown in Fig. 4, which serves to prevent the folded filling ends t from being turned outward by the forward movement of the knife, so as to escape cutting.
Upon a short inclined shaft c is placed the pulley X, from which connection is made with the pulley Y upon the shaft H by means of the belt Cl', the pulley X being driven in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 8. At the inner end of the shaft c is placed the rotary cutter e, the upper edge of which is about on a line with the surface of the table, and above the shaft c and parallel therewith is placed the shaft c2, the said upper shaft being operated from the shaft c by means of the connecting-gears f f', and upon the inner end of the upper shaft c2is placed the rotary cutter e2, which is pressed close to the side of the cutter e', so as to make a shear cut for operating on both sides of the projecting filling ends to be removed. 'The cutters e' e2 are preferably made to revolve in opposition to the forward movement of the edge of the web, so that there will be no' tendency for the cutters to draw the web forward between the same, thus tending to damage the selvage.
Atthe opposite sides of the cutters c c2 are placed the edge-guides g g2, the guide g being made to extend entirely to the surface of the table B, while the guide g2 is held at a slight elevation therefrom, as shown in Fig. `5, in order to provide for the proper passage of' the laterally-projecting ends of the fillings which are to be severed from the web by the The initial guide h', which serves to guide the web onto the table B, is also raised above the surface of the table, as shown in Fig. 6, in which the straw matting is represented, the projecting filling ends b', which are to be removed by the cutters e e2, being made to pass under the lower edge of the guide 7L', while the thicker portion of the fabric at the outer warp-thread b2 will rest against the side of the said guide. The adjustable guide QI at the opposite side of the machine is also adapted to allow the passage of the projecting filling ends .under the same, and the said. guide is made capable of adj ustmeni to suit different widths of webs by means ,of the screw j and slot la.
Over the table B, at a little distance in front of the cutters e e2, are placed the inclined roughened or spur rollers m m,which serve to draw the edge of the Web toward the edge-guides g g2, and thus hold the same properly against the edge of the rotary cutters e e2.
Vhen the web is first placed upon the table for being trimmed, the guide if is to be adjusted to the proper width, so that the web will pass freely between the guides t" and h', the projecting filling ends at each edge of the web passing under the lower edges of the said guides, and as the web is forced forward by hand the revolving cutters c c2 will cut off the projecting filling ends close to the turned edge at the outer warp-thread, and the reciprocating knife w will cut off the ends of the.
.folded-over fillings, and after a sufficient length of the web has been trimmed to allow the forward end of the web to be inserted between the rollers C C the web will be fed forward automatically and canbewound upon the packaging-roller D, and the several webs to be trimmed can be connected to each other, so as to avoid the necessity of rethreading the machine at the insertion of each web. NVhenever the several webs have been run through the machine to trim one edge the edges can be reversed and the opposite edge of the web trimmed in the same manner by again running the web through the machine. The blast of air from the pipe p serves to remove the severed filling ends from the upper surface of the web, and thus prevents the same from being woundwup in the package upon the roller D.
What is claimed as the invention is- 1. The combination, with the cutter-head and knife and means for reciprocating the same, of the fixed guide-bar for the cutterhead and the guide for preventing the elevation of the folded filling ends when under the action of the knife, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the cutter-head and knife and means for reciprocating the same, of the fixed guide-bar for the cutterhead and the spring for pressing the knife against the. surface of the web to cut the folded filling ends, substantially as described.
3. rPhe combination, with a cutter for trim- IOO ming the projecting `filling ends, of an edgetoward the cutters and the edge-guide, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the reciprocating a reciprocating knife for trimming the-folded illing ends, of the eeding-rollers for drawing the wel) through the machine and the roller for winding the package, substantially ae described.
