IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent bld-43,064, dated June 7, 1864.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be '1t known that we, 0. ZELLN and C. TAFTEZON, of the city and county of New York, and the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rotary Steam- Engine; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section showing the cylinders and their arrangement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line av x; Fig. 3, a side view of one of the cocks.
The nature of our invention consists in so arranging several cylinders as to obtain the greatest amount ot power from a given pressure of steam and the minimum quantity of friction.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand our invention, we will more particularly describe its construction and operation.
The machine is composed ot' the cylinders B, C, and C, inclosed within cylindrical easings. The middle one ot' these, B, is the working-cylinder, and is provided with the wings E, intended to receive the pressure of the steam through steam-channels from two sides on the opposite points of that radius described by the wings in turning around their axles. Here lays the principle of leverage applied in its simplest i'orm, without its working being in any way interfered with by additional contrivances. lt is the function of the side cylinders to form moving walls or sides against which the pressure of the steam is received during the operation of the same against the wings; and it is `the function of the casings A and K to surround the cylinders and to conduct the steam through the proper channels D and F. The axles ot' the workingeylinder B and the side cylinders7 C C, are provided with proper gearing, M, to regulate the motion of the cylinders C C in respect to the motion of the cylinder B. The direction of the steam is both simple and ingenious, and is perfectly controlled by the two-way cocks 'Il IIII J, which are inserted into the steam-ports at H, and makes it possible in a moment to change the direction of the cylinders motion by simply turning the cock so as to introduce the steam through one channel or the other.
In order to prevent leakage of steam, the wings and side cylinders are provided with .suitable packings. The axles L of the cylinders have suitable bearin gs at N.
The operation of our machine is as follows: When it is desired to start the engine, the ports are opened by turning the two cocks on the same side in the same direction, as shown by the black lines in Fig. 1, while the other two cocks in the other ports (only shown by red lines in Fig. 2) are turned in the opposite direction, and thereby become the exhaustports. The steam rushes in through the proper channels, coming in contact With the wings on opposite sides of the cylinders, thereby relieving some ot' the pressure upon the journals, which would beincreased it' the steam only operated upon one side of the cylinder. Coming in contact with the wings E, it forces the cylinder B to turn, and as the exhaustport is opened by thepassagc of the wing' past it, it rushes out again. rlhe engine may be stopped by simply turning oft' the steam by the cocks J, and the motion may be reversed by turning them in the opposite direction, as shown 'by the red lines, thus converting the exhaust into the induction ports, and vice versa.

1. The combination and arrangement of the cylinders B U C, the steam-passages D and E, with the two turningcocks J.
2. The arrangement of the steam-passages F F and D D for the purpose of conveying the steam to the pistons ofthe center cylinder.
