Description

but as my mechanism for some of those purposes is specially useful and novel Imake subsidiary claims for combinations of certain portions of it.
As is manifestly evident from the description of the machine and its mode of operation, the essential feature is some device or combination of devices by which the weftthreads (which extend from each side of the fabric to near the center thereof and back again) may be interlocked one with the other. This feature is abolutely necessary, as without it the harness could not be produced, and the devices employed by me to accomplish this result are the basis of the invention herein described. One weft-thread must be carried about the other. Of course this might be done in various ways; but my way seems especially simple and effective to wit, to place the thread carrier or holder (here the shuttle) upon a support capable of rotary movement, then rotate that support (disk J) in such a manner that one thread-holder crosses the path of the other thread and the ends of the respective threads are passed under the opposite threads, whereby they are interlocked, at the same time preferably interposing (within the orbit of the thread-holder) a pin, upon which the loops may be properly sustained while the operation is performed, so that the thread-carriersupported between the warps on each side, (here upon a disk,) the support, and mechanism for rotating it not only in fact constitute the heart, as it were, of the machine shown, but the devising and arranging thereof in their present relations constitutes as well the heart of the invention which I desire to secure, as it renders unnecessary a cumbersome system of gears which are more expensive, less effective, and more liable to get out of order.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A disk mounted to rotate in a loom and carrying portions of two shuttle-races, in combination with a pin projecting beyond the surface of said disk, and mechanism, substantially as described, whereby said disk is rotated, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A disk mounted to rotate in a loom and carrying portions of two shuttle-races,in combination with two pins h h, mechanism, substantially as described, whereby said pins are respectively alternately projected and retracted, and mechanism, substantially as described, whereby said disk is rotated, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, in a loom, of two weftt-hread holders, a shaft mounted to rotate in said loom, a support secured to said shaft and carrying the thread-holders so that they rotate with said shaft, the orbit of each threadholder passing across a line drawn from the opposite warp to the position occupied by the other thread-holder at some period of the rotation, and mechanism, substantially as described, for rotating said shaft,support, and holders, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combinatioin'in a loom, of two weftthread holders, a shaft'mounted to rotate in said loom, a support secured tosaid shaft and carrying the thread-holders so that they rotate with said shaft, the orbit of each threadholder passing across a line drawn from the opposite warp to the position occupied by the other thread-holder at some period of the rotation, a pinion connected to said shaft and provided with a foot, a gear provided with a toothed segment, and mechanism for rotating said gear, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, in a loom, of two Weftthread holders, a shaft mounted to rotate in said loom and carrying means for supporting said thread-holders, and mechanism, substantially as described, for rotating said shaft and holders, as and for the purpose stated.
6. A disk mounted to rotate in a loom and carrying portions of two shuttle-races, in combination with mechanism for rotating said disk, all substantially as set forth.
7. A disk mounted to rotate'in a loom and carrying portions of two shuttle-races, a pinion connected to said disk and provided with a foot, a gear provided with a toothed segment arranged, as described, to mesh with said pinion, and mechanism for rotating said gear, substantially as set forth. v
8. The combination of a disk carrying portions of two shuttle-races, a pinion connected to said disk and provided with a foot, means for moving said pinion laterally, a gear provided with a toothed segment into and out of position for engagement with which said pinion is thrown when moved laterally, and mechanism for rotating said gear, all arranged and combined substantially as set forth.
9.'A disk mounted to rotate in a loom and carrying portions of two sh Little-races, in combination with mechanism for rotating said disk, two shuttle-races, two shuttles, and mechanism for driving the same, all combined substantially as set forth 10. A disk mounted to-rotate in a loom and carrying portions of two shuttle-races, in combination with mechanism for rotating said disk, two shuttle-races, two shuttles and mechanism for driving the same, and packers and means for driving them, all substantially as set forth.
11. A disk mounted to rotate in a loom and carrying portions of two shuttle-races, in combination with mechanism for rotating said disk, two shuttle-races, two shuttles and mechanism for driving the same, and packers and means for driving them, and a pin extending between the positions occupied by the shuttleson said disk, all substantially as set forth. v
