FLUE STRUCTURE OF COOKING RANGES OR STOVES- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,085, dated June 10, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H; PFAHLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Flue Structures of (looking Ranges or Stoves, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide for the ready removal and insertion of the dividing-strip in the flue of a stove or range, a further object being to construct a built-in range with side fines for the oven or for each oven, and a lower flue or fiues which can be readily cleaned from the front of the range.

It has been the usual custom, in constructing what are termed built-in ranges, to form. the voven-flues in the rear, so that the partition-plate int-he flue under the oven may run from front to rear in order to permit the removal of the dust and sootin the fines from the dust-opening in the front of the range.

In what are termed portable ranges that is, ranges that are not built in perma nent brick-workit has been customary and it is preferable to have the oven-fines situated at the side-of the oven, and to provide two openings, one on each side of the partitionplate of the lower fine, for the purpose of cleaning the flue on each side of the said plate; but it has hitherto been considered impracticable to construct a built-in range on this principle, as the brick-work comes within a few inches of the front of the range, and no opportunity is afforded for side openings for permitting access to the lower fiue. I overcome this difficulty in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a double oven-range with a portion of the same broken away to illustrate my invention. Referring to the drawings, A represents the brick-work of the range; 13, the top plate; D, the front plate; E, the fire-pot door; F, the ash-pit door, and G G the ovens, provided with suitable doors G, only one of which is shown.

The descending and ascending fiues a a of the range are situated at the outer sides of the ovens, and the fines a; 00 beneath the bottom g of the oven are separated by a transverse partition-plate I, the products of combustion passing over each oven, asshown by the arrows in Fig. 1, down the flue a, through the flue 00, around the partition I, through the flue m, and up the flue a. The cleaning-opening h in the front plate I) of the range is provided with a suitable door h, as usual, and communicates directly with thefiue x on the front side of the partition I. It will be seen, therefore, that the flue :1: can be readily cleaned by a scraper and brush inserted through the opening h; but it would be impossible to clean the rear flue 00' without first removing the partition-plate I. I therefore provide for removing and replacing this plate in the following manner: In the bottom g of the oven G, I form a slot 6, preferably tapered, as shown in Fig. 3, this slot being of about the same length as the partition-plate I, which has a tapered rib *0, adapted to snugly fit in the tapered slot 6, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to prevent the escape of gas into the oven G., The plate I has an extension I, which joins the partition-plate f, dividing the up and down flues a a.

hen it is required to clean the rear fine 00, the rib t of the partition-plate I is raised by any suitable instrument and the plate withdrawn into the oven, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. A scraper is then inserted through the opening 72, and the dirt and soot removed from both flues w and 00', after which the partition-plate I is replaced.

It will be understood that the draft of the chimney will, under ordinary circumstances, prevent the gases or products of combustion from entering the ovens, the tendency being to draw air from the ovens, rather than to allow products of combustion to enter the same; but practical tests have shown that such a neat fit of the rib 2' is possible that there is no communication whatever between the oven and the flues.

It will be evident that although Ihave described and illustrated the detachable fluestrip as applied to the bottom flue of the range, it is equally adapted for application to side dues or back fines, and it may in many cases be used in portable stoves or ranges, although especially designed for such as are set in permanent brick-Work.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a cooking stove or range, of the oven, the side and bottom flues, with a front plate having a cleaning-opening, with an opening in the bottom plate of the oven, with a partition-plate for the bottom flue, having an extension I to form a continuation of the partition of the side fines, the rib t on the partition-plate adapted to close the opening in the bottom plate of the oven, substantially as described.
