UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. HENDERSON, OF KEOKUK, IOWA.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,524, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed December 15, 1888- Serial No. 293,705. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. HENDERSON, of Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, a citizen of the United'States, have invented a new'and useful Improved Roll-Pa per Holder and Cutter, which is made and used substantially as set forth hereinafter, and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved paper-holder. Fig. 2 is a detail of part of the frame thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of a part thereof, and Fig. 4 is a modification of parts shown in Fig. 3.
The object of this invention is to make an improved, cheap, and practical holder for roll-paper for wrapping and other uses; and the invention consists in the general construction and arrangement of the apparatus, and in various features thereof, substantially as shown and set forth.
The frame A is formed of horizontal parts B, which are held in place by posts 0, having bolts D therein. The posts 0 are arranged to hold the parts B apart, and the bolts D to hold them together, and so the posts will bear against the plates B on different sides of the bolts at each end to make a secure and firm frame. These posts are made for. this purpose with an opening through them orin two parts, as shown. Fig. 2 illustrates such formation in a neat ornamental way of wood in two parts, as cut with ornamental fiutings upon a planing molding machine from plain boards or strips by cutting on bot-h sides to produce the, proper form and leave the required central hole between the two parts for the bolt D as a tie.
The rolls E have central shafts F. to receive the paper in rolls of different widths and qualities on different rolls, from which it may be drawn and torn off as desired. The rolls E are hung to turn freely on hangers G at the ends. These hangers depend from the cross part B above the roll, and have flexible joints in them in some cases and in some cases are merely rods held to the plate B, and
having a somewhat flexible spring to adjust the rolls to the adjustable cutters, as they change in size by the paper being used off. The frame H is hinged above the roll E to part B, and has arms H projecting from such hinges, and a cutter I, which is borne by main arms H. The lu'g L on cross part B over roll E has screw K, the end of which bears against the arm H, so that when the screw is turned backward it will push against arm H and push the cutter I against the paper roll, by which means it may be brought into place (when the paper has been used off so as to loosen it) with a suitable degree of tension, which tension can be adjusted as desired by the screw. The roll can be hung so as to gravitate toward the cutter to assist the adjustment or may be held without motion, except capability for spring for adjustment or tension.
I The cutter Imay be arranged to rest against the roll with its lower edge, as in Fig. 3, so that the paper may be drawn out and then torn off along this edge, or it may be bent, as in Fig. 4, so that it may rest against the roll at an intermediate curved part and have its cutting-edge projected to a distance from the roll,so that the paper may be drawn out and torn off in the same way, but so the end of the paper torn from will project for convenience in subsequent grasping, as shown at M in Fig. 4. In this case a bar N projects below the paper to hold it out from the roll for grasping.
Various other modifications can be made.
I claim 1. The improved paper-holder having the frame A, formed of horizontal parts B and posts 0 and bolts D, and provided with hangers G and roll E, and with hinged holders H, having arms H and cutter I, and with adjusting-screw K.
2. The cutter I, combined with holder H, having arm H and bar N, and with adjustment-screw K, as set forth.
3. The roll E, in combination with the adjust-able holder H, provided with means for holding it firmly in position for use, bearing a part resting on the roll and having a cutteredge held at a distance from the roll.
4. The improved paper-holder having a roll E, held on swinging hangers, in combination with cuttcnframe H, having an arm H and cross-plates B, posts 0, bolts D, roll E, cutter I, holder H and arm H, and screw K, ar- 1o cutter I, and with adjusting-screw K, as set ranged substantially as set forth.
forth.
5. The holder H, having an arm H and. cutter 1, in combination with adjustment-screw K and with roll E and its support.
6. In a paper-holder, the combination of the HENRY T. HENDERSON.
Witnesses;
J. G. GARRETSON, A. H. GARRETSON.
