H. S. CLARK.
STUMP EXTRAOTOR.
Patented June 3, 1890.
1 from unwinding.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUDSON S. CLARK, OFSIGOURNEY, IOWA.
STU M P- EXTRACTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,504, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed March 8, 1890. Serial No. 343,173. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUDSON S. CLARK, a citi-' zen of the United States, and aresident of Sigourney, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus or devices for extracting stumps, but which may also be used for many other useful purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a horse-power apparatus for the above purpose which shall be simple and economical in construction, durable in use, and effective in operation; and it consists in the novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in all the views, Figure l is a central vertical section of a stump-extractor constructed in accordance .with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line a: m, Fig. 1.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the base of the apparatus, preferably made in triangular form, as shown, although it is obvious that it may be made of any other shape or form desired or found convenient. Firmly bolted to this base is a frame 2, which is provided with an upwardlyproj ecting spool 3, sec urelyfixed thereto or formed therewith, and upon which the rope-drum 4 revolves. This drum consists of a vertical cylindrical sleeve 5, encircling the spool 3, and the two annular disks 6 and 7, secured to said sleeve. The lower disk 7 rests upon the frame 2 and is provided with a series of ratchets 8 on its periphery, with whichengages the arm 9, pivoted to the base 1. This arm is weighted at one end and has its other end formed into a ratchet-tooth 10, which engages with the ratchets in the disk 7 and prevents the drum The upper disk 6 is provided with a slot 12, and adjacent theretoon its upper side with a loop 13, by which the rope 14 is secured. At suitable intervals on its periphery the disk 6 is provided wlth a number of projections 14 and hooks or lugs 15, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
At its upper end the spool 3 is provided With a journal 16, upon which the driving-bar 17 revolves. This bar is provided at each end with trace-hooks 18, to receive the traces of a horse or other draft-animal. At the center, on its under side, is firmly bolted or otherwise secured a plate 19, having a downwardly-depending sleeve 20, which fits upon and encircles the journal 16.
21 21 designate two looselydepending rings or hooks on each side of the driving-bar, which are adapted to be engaged with the lugs 15 on disk 6, whereby motion from said bar is imparted to the rope-drum.
The numeral 22 designates a semicircular flange on the upper end of sleeve or spool 3, and 23 designates a loop secured to frame 2 at its rear, by which the device may be secured to a stump or other object and thus held in'place. v
The operation is as follows: The apparatus being placed in proper position and secured by means of loop 23, one end of the wire or other rope is passed through the slot 12 in disk 6 from the inside and securely attached to loop 13. The free end of the rope is then attached to the stump to be extracted. The
hooks or rings 21 are engaged with lugs 15,
and the driving-bar is rotated, causing the rope to be wound on the drum and great pulling strain exerted on the stump to be extracted.
The drum is prevented from upwardly moving on the spool by the flange 22, which fits over the upper end of sleeve 5.
The ratchets and ratchet-tooth 8 and 10 prevent any unwinding of the rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a stump-extractor, the combination, with a supporting-frame, a spool mounted thereon, and a driving-bar provided with loose rings or hooks and rotating on aj ournalformed on the upper end of said spool, of a rope-drum revolving on said spool, consisting of a vertical sleeve and upper and lower disks, the up per disk being provided with lugs to engage the hooks on the driving-bar and with a slot and loop, by means of which the rope is selower disk being provided with ratchets on cured thereto, substantially as described.
2. In a stump-extractor, the combination, with a supporting-frame, a spool mounted thereon, and a driving-bar provided with depending rings or hooks, of a rope-drum consisting of a vertical sleeve having a semicircular flange at its upper end, and upper and lower disks secured thereto, the upper disk being provided with lugs to engage with the hooks on the driving-bar and a slot and loop for securing the rope to the drum, and the its periphery, which engage with a ratchettooth on a weighted arin pivoted to the base of the apparatus, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUDSON S. CLARK.
