Description
UNITED STATES- PATENT FFICE. I
PAUL J. OI-IASSAGNE, OF AKRON, OHIO.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,503, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed November 29, 1889- Serial No. 332,001. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL J. CHASSAGNE, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash-Holder and Burglar-Alarm; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined sash-holders and burglar-alarms; and it consists in the combination of the plate which is secured rigidly to the inside of the window-frame, a second plate which is hinged to the lower end of the stationary plate, and a spring-actuated rod for the purpose of forcing the hinged plate against the'sash when it is raised, as will be more fully described hereinafter. i
The object of my invention is to provide a frictional device for holding the sash at any desired-elevation and thus do away with the weights, cords, and other similar devices which have heretofore been used for this purpose.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a windowframe to which my invention is applied,-
partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. l and showing the hinged plate in a raised position.
A represents an ordinary window-frame, to the inner side of which in the line of travel with the lower sash B is secured the plate 0, which is placed in a suitable recess formed in the frame to receive it. This plate may be of any desired length and width, and has an opening through it sufficiently large to let the spring-actuated operating-rod project through. Hinged or pivoted in any suitable manner to the lower end of this plate O is a second plate D of about equal length, width, and thickness, and which when left free to move drops freely down over the top of the lower'sash. When raised into a vertical po sition by the upward movement of the sash, this plate closes into the same recess in which the plate 0 is placed, and the two plates then just fill this recess, so as to leave the plate D flush with the inner side of the sash.
Extending through the frame at right angles to the two plates 0 D is asuitable opening, and in this opening is preferably placeda tube F, of glass or any other suitable material. In this tube F is placed a rod G, which is operated by the spring 1. Either the rod may be provided with a shoulder against which the spring will bear and the inner end of the rod be prevented from being forced out of the tube F by a washer placed upon it and a pin which passes through its rear end or any other suitable construction that may be preferred will be used; The outer end of this spring-actuated rod G projects through the opening in the plate 0, and when the plate D is raised by the movement of the sash the plate bears against the outer end of the rod G and forces it back into the opening. The pressure of the spring-actuated rod against the plate D causes the plate to exert a sufficient amount of frictional contact against the sash to hold it in any desired position and thus do away with the use of the Weights and cords and the boxes in the frame to receive the weights which have heretofore been used. The pressure of this plate D being always uniform against the sash, the sash can be left in any desired position after being raised without the slightest fear of its falling.
In case it is desired to use this device as a burglar-alarm, it is only necessary to connect one of the wires of the battery with the plate 0 and the other wire with the spring-actuated rod G. This rod, being placed ina glass or non-conducting tube, does not come in contact with either of the plates 0 or D until the plate D is raised by'the raising of the sash B. As soon as the plate comes in contact with the end of the rod the circuit is completed and the alarm is sounded.
In order to prevent the ringing of the alarm during the day, it will only be necessary to place a piece of paper or other similar nonconducting material inside of the plate D, so as to prevent the circuit from being completed.
If so desired, the hinged plate can be dis pensed with and a crescent-shaped or semicircular plate can be fastened to the end of and the spring-actuated rod G, which has its the rod, so as to bear against the sash and outer end to bear against the inner side of the thus support it in position. The stationary plate D and force it against the edge of the plate and the hinge can be made together in sash when the sash is raised, substantially as 15 5 a single piece. shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I In testimony whereof Iaifix my signature in claim-- presence of two witnesses.
The combination of the stationary plate 0 PAUL J. CIIASSAGNE. and the pivoted plate D, which is raised or \Vitncsses: IO closed by the upward movement of the sash, I 0. L. SADLER,
with the tube which is placed in the frame, I 'l. E. W'ELLS.
