\VILLIAM MITCHELMORE BUNSEN, OF GALESVILLE, l/VISOONSIN.
BLOW-GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,499, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed February 18, 1890. Serial No. 3 10,957- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that 1, WILLIAM MITCHELMORE BUNsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesville, in the county of Trempealean and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Blow-Gun, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to blow-guns for the discharge of darts and other similar ammunition.
The objects and advantages of the invention, together with the novel features, will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a blow-gun constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the breech-block. Fig. 4 is a detail of the loads.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I provide a suitable barrel 1, and to the rear end of the same secure the stock 2, comprising the usual grip portion 3 and butt 4. The butt 4 in this instance has one of its sides provided with a pocket or recess for the reception of loads, and to the edge is hinged a cover 7, adapted to be secured in place by a hook 8 or other fastening device.
Formed in the grip portion of the stock is a passage 9, one end of which communicates with the barrel 1 slightly in front of its breach, the opposite end of the passage extending for some distance to the rear and within the grip portion and terminating in a nipple 10, projecting at a desired angle from the stock and adapted to be blown in by the operator or person discharging the gun. If desired, a flexible rubber tube 12 may be connected to the nipple and provided with a mouth-piece 13, so that the operator may assume any position he may desire in sighting the piece.
14: represents .the breech-block, which is provided upon its front face with a soft-rubber or other air-tight packing l5 and has projecting through the same and into the barrel a perforated nipple 16. A small plunger 17 is mounted in the breech-block, projects the breech-block to the rear.
through the nipple, and terminates at its rear end in a push or thumb piece 18, a' coiled spring 19, mounted therein and encircling the plunger, serving to normally retract the same. The breech-block is supported at the upper end of two curved bars 20, pivoted at the sides of the stock, as at 21, the lower ends of the curved bars being connected by a loop 22, forming a convenient finger-hold for the operator.
The operation of my gun is as follows: The lower ends of the curved bars are swung to the front, which, it will be observed, swings A load is now inserted in the breech and the curved bars given a reverse movement. The plunger is now pressed to the front, so as to pass through the nipple and force the load beyond thatv point in the bore of the gun wherein is located the forward end of the-passage. The finger of the operator is inserted in the loop which connects the curved bars, and thebreechblock is drawn snugly to position, so as to form an air-tight joint between itself and the gun-barrel. Now by blowing through the nipple at the end of the tube, or through the flexible rubbertube connecting the same with v the mouth of the operator, a body of air is directed into the bore of the gun and into the space between the breech-block and load, and the latter is expelled with considerable force from the barrel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a gun of the class described, the combination, with the barrel and its stock, of a hinged breech-block, a lever for closing the same, and an air-passage formed in the stock, communicating with the barrel near the breech thereof, and terminating at its rear end in a nipple, substantially as specified.
' 2. In a gun of the class described, the 00111- bination with the barrel and stock, of an airpassage communicating with the barrel near the breech and a breech-block mounted over the breech and provided with a plunger.
bination, with the barrel, the stock, and an air-passage formed in the latter and cou1- municating with the former near its breech, of a removable breech-block provided with a reciprocatingplunger adapted to be projected beyond the point of communication of the passage with the barrel, and a coiled retractin gspring encircling the plunger, substantially as specified.
4. I11 a gun of the class described, the combination, with the barrel and its stock, of the opposite curved bars, the finger-hold connecting the same at the lower ends, the hollow breech-block mounted between the upper ends of the bars, the plunger mounted in the breech-block an d projecting through the front face of the same and terminating at its rear end in a thumb or push lug, a retractingspring for the plunger, a packing for the front face of the breech-block, and an air-passage formed in the stock of the gun and communicating at its front end with the barrel slightly in advance of the bre'eoh-block, substantially as specified.
5. In a gun of the class described,theoo1nbination, with the barrel and its stock, of a hinged breech-block, and a lever for closing the same, composed of two curved bars 20 and having a loop 22, as set forth.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM MITOHELMORE BUNSEN.
