SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,488, dated June 3,1890.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. VAN SCHAACK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This my invention has for its object to provide a show-case for exhibiting samples of sponges placed therein, and in which the several sizes and qualities of Sponges in sorted quantities will be separated by partitions of wire-netting to present themselves for inspection from the four sides of the case, with ready access for removing any one sponge through a door in one side of the cabinet; and with these objects in view my invention consists of the novel d evices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents an elevation of the show-case with its doors wide open, and Fig. 2 a sectional plan of the same on line @c in Fig. l with the doors closed.

Corresponding letters of reference in both figures of the drawings designate like parts.

The frame of the case is composed of base A and top B, connected by vertical cornerposts C. Three sides of this frame are closed with glass plates inserted between the rabbets of the posts and base and top, and secured in a rigid manner. The fourth side of the case is closed by double doors D and E, each with a glass panel, these doors being hung to the corner-posts Cby hinges d, that will permit their being turned wide open. The door D will have small sliding bolts inside to its top and bottom (not shown in the drawings) for securing it after closing, and one of the doors will be provided With a spring-latch e or any oth er locking device for securely closing it. The inside of this case is partitioned off by two sheets of wire-netting F, bent V shape, and secured with their vertical edges against the corner-posts C, with wire staples or other suitable fastenings, and by a narrow sheet of Wire-netting G connecting the opposing corners of partitions F. These partitions F and G reach from thebase to within a short distance fromthe topof the case, dividing the same into four compartments H, I, J, and K, the former three of which can be iilled with sponges to their full capacity, while the compartment K, on account of the doors will simply provide the space for a larger U-shapedpocketL of wirenetting secured againt theinside of the frame of door D, and for a smaller V-shaped pocket M of wire-netting lsecured against the inside of the frame of door E, these pockets combined closely occupying the compartment K, and thus shaped that with opening the door E the pocket M will clear the pocket L, and that then after the doorE has been opened the pocket L will clear the partition F with opening door D. For each such compartment or pocket one side is formed by oneof the glass plates that, when filled with Sponges, a portion of them will lean against such glasses to be in unobstructed view from the outside.

After the doors have been opened admittance can be had into each compartment or may be made heXagon or any other suitablev shape, and in place of a double door it may be provided with a single door, and although I consider the arrangement of dividing the case into compartments by vertical partitions, in the manner shown and described as being the most convenient, still these may be varied to suit circumstances, and therefore I desire not to be limited to this particular arrangement.

A show-case thus arranged, when placed on a stand, table, or counter to be free to inspection from all sides, will not. only exhibit a full assortment of Sponges, at the same time protecting the sponges against dust or playful handling, but will also give the salesman IOO ready access to remove any one or more Sponges for closer examination by his customer.

That I claim is l. A show-case for the purpose described, having glass side Walls with a door or doors to one side and its inner ,space divided by Wire-netting into compartments facing the glass side walls and accessible through the door or doors, substantially as set forth.

2. A show-case for the purpose described, having glass side Walls with a door or doors to one side, and its inner space divided by vertical partitions into compartments facing the glass side Walls and accessible through the door 0r doors of the case and through openings in the partitions, substantially as set forth.

3. A show-ease for the purpose described, having glass side walls with a glass door or doors to one side and divided' by vertical` partitions of Wire-netting into compartments facing the glass walls, and the door or doors having attached pockets of Wire-netting occupying the space of one compartment, substantially as set forth.

4. A show-case for the purpose described, having glass side walls with a glass door or doorsin one side and divided by vertical partitions of Wire-netting into compartments, one facing each glass Wall, and the door or doors having attached pockets of wire-netting occupying the space of one compartment, and each compartment and pocket being accessible through the door or doors of the case and through Openings in the Wire-netting, substantially as set forth.

5. A show-ease for the purpose described, consisting of base A, top B, and corner-posts C, with glass plates inserted to form the side walls and with glass doors D and E, and of partitions F and G, dividing the space in such case into compartments I-I, I, J, and K, and the doors having attached each a pocket L M, occupying compartment K, substantially as set forth. i

A show-case for the purpose described, consisting of base A, top B, and corner-posts C, with glass plates inserted to form the side Walls, and With glass doors D and E, and of Wire-netting partitions F and G, dividing the space in such case into compartments Il, l, J, and K, and the doors D E, having attached each a pocket L M, occupying compartment K, and each compartment and pocket being accessible through an opening in the wirenettings closed by a wire lid j', substantially as set forth.
