SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 429,441, dated June 3, 1890. Application filed February l, 1888- Serial No. 262,681. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GORDON, a citil zen ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, 1n the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regenerative Gas-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others 1o skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of lamps known as inverted regenerative lamps, for certain forms of which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me July 13, 1886, and November '29, 1887, and for which I have filed other applications for Letters Patent, serially numbered, respectively, 217,717, 249,511, and 261,912; and the nature ofthe zo present improvement consists in certain modifications in the construction of lamps of this class, hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the gas chamber and burner and other parts of the lamp are so constructed 2 5 and arranged that they may be readily separated and the parts thereof removed for cleaning and repairs, the central regenerative chamber accurately secured in position, and the parts of the lamp which support the central regenerative chamber and also the outer air-deflector be free to expand or contract.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a lamp on line C D ofrFig. 2. Fig; 2 is a horizontal section 3 5 through line A9 B9 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical elevation and section on line E E of Fig. 2, showing the means adopted for securing the several parts in place. Fig. 4 is atop view on the right of the center line, showing 4o the arrangement of the gassinlets, anda bottom view to the left of said line, showing the arrangement of screws for securing the outer air-deiector. Fig. 5 represents a detail View of the center flue. Fig. 6 represents a section and plan of the spider for supporting the Referring to the drawings, the gas-burner A is cast of one piece of metal, having rim projections B above and C below the center line of the ribs E. These ribs E are drilled through longitudinally, forming passages for the gas. The spaces F between the tubes thus formed admit of the passage of air downward to the outer surface of the flame.
The gas-chamber G is formed in two sections H and I, having lugs J cast on their peo ripheries. (See Fig. These parts being ttecl to each other and to the burner to form gas-tight joints, oner or more gas-inlet ports K are provided, and the gas-pipes may be connectedthereto in such manner as to form supports in suspending the lamp. To the lower surface of section I of the gas-chamber is iitted the globe-holder L, which is secured thereto by a hinge and latch to provide facilities for cleaning or replacing the globe and light- 7o ing the lamp. Section I of the gas-chamber has also cast upon its lower inner circumfer. ence and projecting downward therefrom a rim M, to which is secured a deflector-plate N. This deflector-plate is provided with lugs O, projecting' upward, having smooth holes drilled horizontally through them. The screws P, which serve to support the deflector N, are secured in the rim M, and the ends of the screws are turned to lit smoothlyin the holes 8o in lugs O. The deflector N is of somewhat smaller diameter than the inner circumference of the rim M, thus leaving an annular space, through which air may pass to the inner surface of the globe to prevent overheating, duc. Any difference in expansion which may exist between the deflector N and other parts is thus provided for, and the life of these parts is thereby lengthened.
Section H of the gas-chamber is provided 9o I with lugs Q at its upper surface projecting inward, the object of which is to forma support for the spider D. Said spider 'is con! structed with ledges R R upon its inner circumference. Projecting downward from said ledges are fingers S, which also project inward and touch the center flue some distance below its point of support. Above the'ledges R R, and upon the inner circumference of the collar D2 of the spider D, are projections T, roo
lower surface of the burner and surrounding the lower end thereof, serve the purpose of filtering the air-supply and causing it` to be delivered to the flame evenly andin smooth currents, preventing Iiickering and unst-eadiness'in the light. They also serve to more thoroughly heat the air. The arms D of the spider D are fitted to the lugs Q of the gaschalnber, section H, in such a manner as to maintain the spider in a position concentric with l[he other parts of the lamp, (see Figs. l and 2,) while it is also free to expandand contract without injury to any part of the apparatus. A collar D2 is cast upon the spider' D, to which is attached the chimney X.
I prefer to construct the center flue R of one piece of refractory materialhaving lugs R2. These lugs are made of such size as to pass readily up through the openings 0c of the spider D. `lhe projections T are so placed as to act as stops to prevent the center flue being passed too far up, and the pins or projections T are provided to prevent accidental displacement of the center flue. NV ith this arrangement it will be impossible to remove the center flue without first having raised it far enough for lugs R2 to pass over pins or projections T.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
