UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DIETRICH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,428, dated June 3, 1890. Application filed March 8 1890. Serial No. 343,084. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DIETEIGH, of Buffalo-,in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-Vlachines; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to improvements in washing-machines; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereunto annexed, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved washingmachine. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken in line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional elevation in line 00 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a fragmental view of the rubbingsurface of one of the rubbing-plates.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
The object of this invention is the produc tion of a simple, cheap, and efiicient Washingmachine for laundry, family, and other purposes. To attain this result I construct my device substantially as shown in the drawings, in which A represents the body, and A the bottom, of my device supported upon legs Cb, said body being provided with a stiffening-rib a at its upper extremity. Upon the upper end of this body A is secured a frame B, having on one side two horizontal bearings b b for the reception of a shaft 0, and on the'other side with an arm B, having a vertical bearing The lever H is depressed, bringing the plates 1). This arm B is also provided with a transverse bearing 77/, Fig. 2. The shaft 0, before mentioned, is provided at its outer extremity with a crank-handle c to revolve it, and on the inner end with a bevel-gear O to transmit motion to bevel-gears D E, meshing with said gear 0, as hereinafter stated.
In the center of the frame B is j ournaled a vertically-disposed hollow spindle D, provided for a portion of its length with a laterally-extending rib, feather, or other projection d on its exterior, Figs. 2 and 3. To the upper extremity of this spindle is fastened the bevelgear D, before mentioned. In the interior of this spindle D a shaft E freely revolves, near the upper end of which is secured the bevelgear E. 'The upper extremity of this shaft is journaled in the bearing 1), audit has at its lower end, adjacent to the bottom A, a circular rubbing-plate 6, having upon its upper face radial flutes or corrugations e, the said spindle D terminating slightly above the said plate 6..
Onthe spindle D, before mentioned, is placed a plate F, having a boss f, provided with an aperture and recess adapted to fit over the periphery of said spindle and its rib cl, whereby the plate F may be moved vertically, but cannot be revolved independently of the spindle. This plate F is provided at one side with an auxiliary plate F, said plates being hinged together by hinges f and locked together in a horizontal position by the latches t. Upon the upper end of the boss f on said plate is fastened a washer f, between which and the said plate F upon said boss is located a ring G, having on opposite sides upwardlyprojecting apertured lips g 9', Figs. 3 and 4., from which lead two rods or wires h h upwardly to arms H H of a forked lever H, which is pivoted by a suitable bolt to the bearing 71/ on the frame B, before mentioned. This lever is provided at its extremity with a handle 7., whereby by manipulating said lever the plates F F may be raised or lowered.
Upon the shaft D above the plateF is placed a collar K, held in position by means of a set or thumb screw in. Between this collar and the boss f on the plate is placed a spring K, to force the plate and its appurtenants downwardly.
The operation of my device is as follows:
F F to the surface. The latches locking these plates are now withdrawn and the plate F swung back. The fabric to be cleaned may now be placed into the machine by pushing the same through the opening caused by the hinged plate F. The machine now being filled, the plate F may be swung into position and relocked, after which the collar K is pushed downward as far as possible and there fastened by the thumb-screw k to produce a pressure upon the plates F F. The machine may now be revolved by means of the shaft C. After the fabric has been sufliciently rubbed and Washed the same maybe removed from the machine.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I
claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, with the spindle D, having the lateral rib (Z, of the plate F, having the boss f, provided with an aperture and recess to fit said spindle, the Washer f, attached to said boss, the adjustable collar K, and the spring K, between said collar and washer, the ring l, having the lips g g, between said Washer and plate, the rods h 71,,
