UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GO'ITLIEB VIDULE, MILVAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SAM PLE-RECORD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,401, dated June 3,1890.
Application filed December 2, 1889. Serial No. 332,287. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GOTTLIEB WIDULE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample- Records; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to means for keeping track of samples issued to salesmen traveling for wholesale dealers in clothing and various other commodities designated by lot-numbers and it consists of a writing-surface ruled to present two margins at right angles to each other and a series of rectangular spaces coincident to certain arbitrary designations placed on each margin.
My invention further consists of such a writing-surface combined with a peculiar index-strip, as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I represents a plan view of a writing-surface ruled in accordance to my invention; Fig. 2, a similar View of an index-strip for use in connection with the writing-surface, and Fig. 3 an edge View of a portion of the index-strip.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a writing-surface ruled to present a vertical margin B, horizontal margin C, and a series of rectangular spaces D. The ruled lines forming the vertical boundaries of the rectangular spaces are preferably extended the full length of the writing-surface, and the lines forming the horizontal boundaries of said spaces preferably extend entirely across said surface, as illustrated in Fig. l. Between the horizontal lines extending across the vertical margin of the writing-surface are placed the lot-numbers of the commodities in stock, and between the vertical lilies extended across the horizontal margin are placed numbers or names or both, or other arbitrary designations representing the traveling salesmen, and thus it will be seen that for each salesman there is a space coincident with each lot-number.
When the samples are issued, the size-marks are noted in the spaces D to correspond with the lot-numbers and designations of the salesman. For example, if size four of lot 7,675is issued to salesman No. 8, the figure 4 is placed in the space formed by the intersection of horizontal lines immediately adjacent to said lot-number and the vertical lines immediately adjacent to the designation representing said salesman, as shown in Fig. 1, this scheme being'carried on indefinitely, as each writingsurface can be made to accord with any number of lots and salesmen. At the foot of each column of rectangular spaces the total number of samples in the possession of any one or more of the salesmen may be demonstrated, and thus it may be seen at aglance just how much stock may be'out in the way of samples.
In order to facilitate the labor of a stockclerk in noting or tracing up the samples of various lots, I provide an index-strip E for use in connection with the writing-surface above described. This index-strip is preferably ruled to correspond with the horizontal margin C on the writing-surface, the designations representing the various salesmen being duplicated on said strip, and the latter is yalso 'preferably provided at its ends with ears or handles F.
In practice the index is laid on the writingsurface so that the designations thereon representing the salesmen will register with the vertical columns of spaces corresponding to said salesmen, the upper edge of said strip being parallel to the horizontal line below any one of the lot-numbers. Now, by following along said upper edge of the index-strip, the various sizes of any lot in use as samples can be readily ascertained.
By my invention the recording of samples is so simplified that there is a perfect check against the salesmen, and the location of any particular size of any lot can be ascertained aty a glance, thereby effecting a saving of time and labor to the stock-clerk, While at the same time there are a number of other advantages not knecessary to mention, but which will at once commend themselves to any wholesale dealer in commodities designated by lot-numbers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A writing-surface ruled to present two mar- IOO lg'ins at right angles to each other and :L se-A have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in ries of spaces coincident with Certain arbithe county of Milwaukee and State of W istrmy designations placed on the margins, in cousin, in the presence of two Witnesses. combination with an index-strip provided with designations corresponding1 to those on one of said margins, substantially set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I GOTTLIEB WIDULE. lVtnesses;
N. E. OLIPHANT, WM. KLUG.
