UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEORGE E. TREGURTHA, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
STEAM- BOILER.
SPECIFIGA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,252, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed November 23, 1888. Serial No. 291,676. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. TREGURTHA, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to steam-boilers, and to that particular class of steam-boilers which are termed sectional boilers, and it consists 1n certain novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure l of the drawings is a side eleva tion of the various sections of the boiler, with the shell or outer casing cut in section on line ac a: on Fig. 2. Fig. 2is a vertical section through the outer casing and sediment-collectors on lineyy on Fig. 1, and showing the sections in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through two of the sections on line .2 z on Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A is the shell or outer casing.
B is the smoke-flue; CO, the sediment-collecting drums or tubes; D, the steam-drum; E, the steam-discharge pipe, and F a pipe connecting the steam-drum with the sediment-collectors O C. The sediment-drums C O are provided at each end with removable caps G O, by removing which access maybe had to the interior of said drums for removing the sediment collected therein.
G is the grate, extending the Whole length of the boiler from front to rear, and upon each side thereof is arranged a series of vertical drums or tubes 11 H, each of which tubes is connected by a smaller pipe a to one of the sediment-drums O and at its other end by a quarter-turn pipe 1) to one end of a horizontal steam-drum I, which in turn is connected by the pipes c and c with the steam-drum D upon opposite sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 2.
A series of bent tubes d are set in each of the vertical drums H, and project therefrom toward the center of the boiler directly over the grate, and are connected at their other ends with the horizontal drums I, as shown in Fig. 2.
Each section of the generator is composed of two upright drums H, one horizontal drum I, two quarter-bendsb, and two series of bent tubes (Z, and each section is connected by pipes a a to both of the sediment-drums O C and by the pipes c and c to the steam-drum D, as shown, and the circulation in each section is independent of the circulation in any other section. By this construction and arrangement of the drums and circulatingtubes a very effective and large heating-surface is obtained, and provision is made whereby exeessive expansion and contraction of the parts will not injure the joints or cause leakage thereof.
The object of the pipes F, connecting the steam-drum D with the sediment-drums C O, is to furnish 'a passage for any water that may be carried into the drum D with the steam to return to the cooler parts of the boiler.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A steam-boiler composed of a series of sections, each consisting of two vertical drums, a horizontal drum connected to said vertical drums by a quarter-bend at each end thereof, and two series of bent tubes, one of said series communicating with the interior of one of said vertical drums, and the other series with the opposite vertical drum, and both series projecting inward from said drums and over the grate.
2. The combination of a series of sections, each composed of drums H H and I, and two series of bent tubes d, two sediment-drums O C, pipes leading from said sediment-drums to each of the drums H, a steam-drum arranged in a plane at right angles to the drums I, and pipes connecting said steam-drum with each of said drums I.
3. The combination of a series of sections, each composed of two vertical drums and one horizontal drum connected together, and two series of bent tubes d, two sediment-drums, pipes connecting said sediment-drums with each of said vertical drums, a steam-drum located above said sections with its axis in a Vertical plane at right angles to the axes of i name to this specification, in the presence of said horizontal drums, pipes connecting said two subscribing Witnesses, on this 19th day steam-drum with said horizontal drumsoi' the of November, A. D. 1888.
several sections, and a pipe connecting said GEO. E. TREGURTHA. 5 steam-drum with the sediment-drums indo- \Vitnesses:
pendently of said sections. N. C. LOMBARD,
In testimony whereof I have signed my ALTER E. LOMBARD.
