COMBINATION WALKING-STICK OR CANE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM FLAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination W'alking=Stick or Cane, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention has relation to a combination walking-stick or can e, and among the objects in view is to provide a cane formed in sections and adapted to be spread and serve as a seat.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for locking the sections together and to provide a combined handle and smoking-pipe.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a cane constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the cane being in position as a chair. Fi 3 is a perspective view of the handle when adapted for use as a pipe, and Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of the handle in position upon the cane. Fig. 5 is a detail of the sleeve.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings;

1 represents the cane, and the same, as is usual in canes of this character, comprises three sections 2, which, when combined and parallel with each other, form a complete walking-stick. The sections 2 are pivotally connected at or near their centers and are adapted to spread and form a tripod. One of the sections 2 is shorter than the companion sections and is provided with a sheetmetal sleeve 3, partaking of the transverse contour of the section 2, and provided with opposite inwardly-turned flanges 4, embracing the opposite edges of the section. By this sleeve, which is mounted for sliding on the short section 2, said section may be elongated or shortened, as desired, for a purpose hereinafter apparent.

5 represents the seat-tapes, which connect each of the sections 2 at a point, opposite the upper end of the shorter of said sections, so

that when the sections are spread to form the seat, as in Fig. 2, the two longer sections form a back for the seat. By folding the sections together or bringing them into parallelism, as for a cane, as shown in Fig. 1, the

seat-tapes are loosened and fold within the three sections. Prior to bringing the sec tions to this position the sliding sleeve 3 is elongated, so that the shorter section 2 becomes as long as the remaining sections, and the flexible seat-tapes fold within the sleeve.

6 represents an ordinary removable ferrule, which is mounted over the lower ends of the folded sections and serves to maintain them in parallelism.

7 represents the handle, the upper portion of which is in this instance in the form of the bowl of a pipe 8, having an opening 9, into which may be inserted a mouth-piece or stem 10, which when not in use, or when the handle is serving its proper or ordinary function, rests within the bowl, as shown in Fig. 4. The upper edge of the bowl is provided with an annular flange 11, which is adapted to receive the upper ends of the sections 2 when in parallelism, and serves to maintain the upper ends together. I

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a combination walking stick, the co1nbination, with the sections thereof, of a handle having a flange for receiving the ends of the sections and terminating at its upper end in a pipebowl, substantially as specified.

2. In a combination walking-stick, the combination, with the sections thereof, of a handle terminating at its upper end in a pipebowl having a stem-receiving opening, a stem inclosed by the bowl, and a flange on the lower endof the bowl adapted to receive the upper ends of the sections, substantially as specified.

3. In a combination walking stick, the three sections pivoted and adapted to be spread and form a tripod, one of said sections being shorter than its companions, in combination with a flexible seat mounted on the sections at a height agreeing with the upper end of the shorter sections, whereby the longer sections form a back, substantially as specified.

4:. In a combination walkingstick, the three sections pivoted near their centers, one of the sections being shorter than its companions, and a seat connecting the sections at a height agreeing with the height of the shorter sections, and a metallic sleeve mounted on the shorter section and so as to slide thereon and adapted to receive the seat When the sections are folded, substantially as specified.
