CAR=COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,180, dated June 3, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. TALPEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and Ido declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a topview, Fig. 2' a front View, and Fig.3 a vertical median and longitudinal section,of a draw-head of my invention. Fig. 4 is a top view of the same, showing the cover of its mouth in a raised position and the plates covering its top removed. Fig. 5 is a View showing two draw-heads connected to a coupling, one of said heads being represented in side elevation and the other in vertical section, the cover of one of the draw-heads being shown in dotted lines as in a raised position. Fig. 6 is a top View of the coupling.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
In the drawings, A represents the drawhead,within which is a chamber B, adapted to receive one end of the coupling 0, which consists of a flat bar having its ends :0 m shaped approximately like an arrow-head, essentially as represented in Fig. 6.
Arranged in the draw-head, and so as to slide in a horizontal plane in chambers to a therein, are slide-bars D D opposite to each other, the inner ends of which project into the chamber B, and are sloped or curved horizontally, as shown. To the shanks b of the bars D springs c are applied, which bear against the shoulders d of the bars and the shoulders e of the chambers a and force the said bars toward each other. Nuts f are screwed on the outer ends of said slide-bars to limit their inward movement. The chambers a of the draw-head are covered by plates g, secured to the head by bolts.
Hinged to the draw-head at h is a cover E, which closes the chamber B at top, the under side of said cover being inclined ate, and
the bottom of the chamber B at lo, to give to the draw-head a flaring mouth in a vertical plane. The sides Z of the cover E, when the latter is closed, rest on the top of the head and shut between the plates g, projections at extending below said sides into notches n in the sides of the chamber B, as represented.
Pivoted to the cover at 0 0 is a yoke or bail shaped lever F the shorter arms of which constitute hooks p p, the latter, when the bail is down, as shown in full lines in the several figures, engaging with eyes (1 q, secured to the head.
Fixed to the under side of the cover and near to its hinge is a stirrup 0, which projects downward into the chamber B, its bottom extending below the rest .2 in said chamber for the coupling, the end of the coupling entering the stirrup (see Fig. 5) when connected to the draw-head. The said coupling 0 is sustained in a horizontal position, or thereabout, in the draw-head by bearing at its bottom on the said rest .2 and atits top against the under side of the cover, (see Fig. 5,) and on passing into the fellow head enters between and forces the slide-bars D D apart until the shoulders s s of the coupling pass the points i t of the slide-bars, when the latter will be moved inward by the springs c c and the coupling locked to the draw-head.
To disengage the coupling 0 from the drawhead, raise the bail F, and as soon as the hooks p p are free from the eyes q q the cover E will swing upward on its hinge, and the stirrup r at the same time raises the head of the coupling out of contact with the slides D and said coupling is free to be drawn out of the draw-head. The bail-lever F when down operates with the eyes (1 q to lock the cover E to the draw-head, and when raised to unlock the said cover, and may be operated by a line or chain extending from it to the top of the car, or carried through bearings on the end of the car to within reach of a person standing beside the car.
The draw-head is provided with a hole u, extending vertically through its bottom and cover to receive a pin when a link-coupling is used to connect the draw-heads, as may sometimes be required, and, as will be pereeived, the projections m operate with the notches nto relieve the hinge 72 from strain when the draw-heads are connected in this manner.
"What I claim is- 1. The draw-head, substantially as described, it consisting of the part A, provided with the chambers] and a a, the spring slide bars movable in the latter, said bars extending into the chamber 13, the cover hinged to the head, the stirrup fixed to the cover, and the yoke pivoted thereto, the eyes fixed to the head and operating with the yoke to lock the cover to the head, combined with the arrowheaded coupling 0, as represented.
2. The draw-head consisting of the part A, provided with the chamber B, notches n, and eyes 1, the cover hinged to the head and having the projections m, the yoke pivoted to the cover and engaging the said eyes to lock the cover, and the passage u in the head, comhined with a link-coupling and pin, as explained.
3. The car-coupling, substantially as described, it consisting of the heads A A, each notched at n, provided with eyes q, and chambered at l and a a, the spring slide-bars adapted to be moved in the latter chambers, the sprii'igs therein, the covers hinged to the heads and provided with the projections in, the stirrups fixed to the covers, the yokes pivoted thereto and operating with the eyes to lock the covers to the heads, with the coupling 0, provided with heads adapted to move the spring-bars apart to engage therewith, essentially as set forth.
