Be it known that I, EDMUND N. MARTINEAU,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pasting Strengthening Cloth or Tape on the Backs of Books, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in machines for securing the strip of strengthening cloth or tape on the back of paper or card-board covers of books, which strip of tape covers the line of fold, as well known. At the time of securing this strip of tape to the book at the folding-line of its cover or back the book has been otherwise completed, the leaves thereof having been sewed into the covers; but sometimes the books so covered and sewed are of a length two or more times greater than that required for the books to be produced, in which event the parts are to be out into the required lengths after the back strips have been secured thereto; and

2 5 the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, all substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be setforth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar,

characters of reference indicate correspond ing parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a'sec- 'tional projection. of the machine, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of some of the driving mech- 5 anism, and Fig. 3 is a view of ablank or other book substantially of the form for and on which the machine has capabilities for operative action.

In the drawings, A represents the horizontal 4o work-table at the rear end of the machine,

above which, on suitable supporting-brackets,

is the supply-roll a of tape or narrow cloth a, to be used for backing the covers of the books at the fold. Near and in advance of 5 the tape-supply roll, above the work-table, is

the paste-roll 13, working in a suitable pastepan, over which the tape is to be passed,

and intermediate of said tape-supply roll and paste-roll is a tank 0 for water, provided with a guide-rod b, for guiding the tape under the water, above and in advance of which are squeezer-rollers c 0. Immediately in ad- Vance of the work-table is a pair of feedrolls d d, the line of contact of the peripheries thereof being about on a level with or slightly above the top of the work-table. The lower of said feed-rolls is also the supporting-roll for a series of carrier tapes or cords e e, the other supportingroll cl therefor being somewhat in advance thereof. The said strengthening-strip may be of tape, cloth, leather, strong paper, or other suitable material.

In advance of the carrier feed-tapes e and the foremost roll d therefor one or more pairs of feed and pressure rolls f f are provided, in advance of which, with its upper surface level with the contact of said rolls f f, is another roller g, above which is a pressure-roller it, carried at one end of arms of a swinging frame 2', pivotally supported on the main frame X of the machine, and adapted to be weighted so that the roll h may exert more or less pressure on the roller g or on the book and tape being applied thereto, which may be between said laterally-m entioned rollers. The upper of said rollers f f are provided with springs at their journals, as usual in yielding rollers.

The roller g and the roller g, located at quite a distance in advance thereof, form a pair of supporting and feed rolls for a broad endless apron D, of felt or other suitable flexible material, below the top portion of which endless apron is a board E, suitably supported from the frame X, and which serves to prevent the upper part of the endless apron from sagging, said board being preferably formed slightly crowning.

j represents a horizontal guide-bar at the rear and a little above the axis of the rear and upper roll f, provided with a guidingnotch j therein, of a width corresponding to that of the tape and in the longitudinal line of the machine corresponding with said notch, or, in other words, with the line of the tape. Thelower rolls of the pairs of rolls f areformed with peripheral depressions 7t 7;, as Wide or slightly wider than is the tape.

Two adjustable gage-bars F G are provided ranging longitudinally of the machine, one of which is at the rear side of the work-table A, and the other of which is at the rear side of IOC the machine opposite the endless carrying tapes or cords c c, the purpose of which is to keep the books which are fed into the machine opened, with the backs of their covers uppermost, disposed and truly guided so that the middle folding-line of the book will be guided in the vertical plane which is coincident with the line of the tape, and II represents a spring-arm suitably and adj ustably supported on the main frame, ranging substantially longitudinally of the machine, but with its forward end slightly deflected toward the rear of the machine and adapted to exert a slight and yielding pressure toward the rear gage G, its action 011 the book being fed through the machine being to keep the book with its rear edge against the said rear gage. The said spring-arm is adapted by its adjustable form of connection with the sup porting-frame to be moved transversely and set for the proper action on books of varying widths. All the rollers are to be given motions of rotation to feed forward from the work-table, the speeds of all the rolls being to give a uniform motion to the books, the paste-roller, however, to have a movement either faster or slower than the movement of the tape past it, so that there will be a dragging or wiping contact by the tape over the paste-roll, whereby the paste will be properly applied on the underside of the tape. The tape which passes off from the supply-roll is thence guided by the rod Z) into the water in the tank to be moistened, then through the squeezcrrolls, all excess of moisture being expressed from the tape passing to and over the pasteroil, where it receives a coating of paste. The

books having been fed in from the work-table between the rollers (Z (Z are conveyed to and bet-ween the feed and pressure rollers f f, and are thereby flattened out to receive at the central line of their backs the tape which is guided thereto by the notched bar j. Running the first book through the machine, at the time it has been passed nearly to the rolls ff the tape is drawn down by hand and through said rolls with the book, and as they are passed between the roller 9 and the presseurollcr 71. the tape is firmly pressed by the latter to the back of the book. After one book has been passed through the machine the tape will, as such book is fed forward of the presser-roll 71 on and by the endless apron D, from its being stuck to such foremost book, be drawn from the tape-supply roll, and books being fed through the machinein close succession will, as they pass between the rolls f f, be flattened out to receive the even laying on of the tape, and as the tape, which, while between said rolls f f, is brought to a contact with the back of the book, is in its passage between the roll 9 and the weighted roll 7t always firmly pressed upon the back of the book T. Owing to spaces between books, which at times may be considerable, due to failure to feed a book through closelybehind the preceding one, the paste on the under side of the tape, on passing through the rolls ff when no book is interposed between the lower roll and the said tape, would be deposited upon the surface of the lower rolls f were it not for the provision of the depressions 7: k in said lower rolls; but of course it will be plain that by the provision of said depressions no paste will be laid on the lower rolls f f by the tapes in the failure of a book to pass through the said rolls with the tape, The books, having passed onto the endless apron, which is to be of any desired length, may be severed the one from the other by cutting the tape between their ends and disposed of as most convenient.

hat I claim as my invention is- 1. A machine for pasting the backing-tape on the covers of books, comprising, in combination, a tape-supply 'roll, a paste-roller, one or more pairs of feed and pressure rolls f f, and in ad vance thereof a tape-pressin g device, as the roll 71., and a supporting and impressreceiving body, as the roll g, next to said pressing device, substantially as described.

2. A machine for pasting backing-tape on the covers of books, comprising, in combination, a tape-supply roll, a paste-roller, a moistening-tank, and a pair of squeezer-rollers between said supply-roll and paste-roll, one or more pairs of feed and pressure rolls ff, and in advance thereof a tape-pressing device, as the roll 71 and a supporting and impress-re ceivin g body, as the roll g, next to said pressing device, substantially as described.

A machine for the purpose specilied,eo1nprising, in combination, a tape-supply roll, a paste-roller, one or more pairs of feed and pressure rollers, the lowermostof which have depressions 71:, and in advance thereof a tapepressing device, as the roll 7t, and a supporting and impress-receiving body, as the roll g, next to said pressing device, substantially as described.

A machine for the purpose specified, comprising, in combination, a paste-roller, one or more pairs of feed and pressure rolls f f, a tape-guiding device operating substantially as the notched barj at the rear of said rolls f, and in advance thereof a tape-pressing device, as the roll 71., and a supporting and impress-receiving body, as the roll 9, next to said pressing device, substantially as described.

5. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination, with feed and pressure rolls j", and supply, pasting, and guiding devices for tape, of the rolls (6 (l and carrier-tapes e c, and the gage G at the rear of said rolls f, and a pressing device, as roll 7t, and a supporting and impress receiving body next thereto .in advance of said rolls, substantially as described.

6. In a machine for the purpose specified,

the combination, with feed and pressure rolls f, supply, pasting, and guiding devices for tape, of the rolls (l d and carrier-cords c c, the adjustable gage G, and the evening or guiding arm H at the rear of said rolls f, and a pressing device and impress-receiving body in advance of said rolls, substantially as described.

7. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination, with feed and pressure rollers f f, and supply, pasting, and guiding devices for tape, of the rolls d d and carriercords e e, the Work-table A, having an adj ustable gage F, and the adj ustable gage and guide G at the rear of said rolls f, and the pressureroll it and supporting-roll g in advance of said rolls f.

8. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination, with the impresssupporting body, as the roll g, and the presser device, as the roll h, of supply, pasting, and guiding devices for tape, and carrying and guiding devices for books to and between said pressing and supporting devices, substan-- tially as and for the purpose described.

9. In a machine for the purpose specified, the combination,with the pressure-roll h and the supporting-roll g, and another roll g in advance thereof, of the supply, pasting, and guiding devices for tape, and feeding and guiding devices for books, and an endless apron around said rolls g g, substantially as described. 10. In a machine for the purpose specified, in combination, one or more pairs of rolls ff, the lowermost of which have the depressions k and at the rear thereof the guiding-bar j, the tape-supply roll, the tank, and squeezerrolls and the paste-roll, the work-table having the adjustable gage, the feed-rolls d d, and the roll d, and endless carrier-cords e e, the gage and guide G, and spring-arm H, and in advance of said rolls f the rolls 9 g, the presser-roll h, and the endless apron, arranged for operation substantially as and for the purpose described.
