Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MCFARLANE, OF MATTEAWAN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN FALOONER, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVED DEVICE-FOR DYEING FELT CPS, &C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,915, dated May 24, 1864.
To all whom it may col/1.067%.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MCFARLANE, of' Matteawan, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, .have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dyeing Felt Caps and other Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following; is a f'ull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a side view of' a seamless felt cap, illustrating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the clampingpieces and clamps, the use of' which constitutes my invention. Fig. 3 is a face view of one ofthe clamping-pieces.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to exclude the dye from certain parts of any article and obtain thereon, after the dyeing process, agure. or figures of' the original color which the article had before the dyeing, as, for instance, the white figure a a, around the band ot' the seamless felt cap. (Represented in Fig. 1.)
The present invention particularly consists in an improved and simplified device for the purpose named.
A A are the clamping-pieces, of tiunedbrass, or other metal, having their opposite faces flat, and of a form corresponding with the figure c a, to be produced as shown at b b in Fig. 2. These clampingpieces are fitted together with dowel-pins c c, on one entering holes d d, in the other t0 make the figures b b on their faces register accurately with each other, and are secured together preparatory to and during the dyeing process by means of' one or more screw-clamps, B B, which produce the requisite pressure on the cap or other article placed between them.
Then the article or fortion thereof upon which the figure is to be produced is of circular or other endless form, likeI the band of a cap, the said article or portion is folded dat, as shown iu Fig. 2, in which C C represents a section of the baud of the cap, and in this condition is placed between the faces of the clampingpieces A A, and compressed by the application of the clamps B B, and the screwing up of' their screws; and the clamping-pieces, clamps, and the cap or other article are placed together in thedyc-vat and allowed to remain therein for a sufficient time. After the dyeing has been finished the cap or other article is well rinsed or washed to prevent the dye from running into the parts which have been pressed between the clamping-pieces to produce the uncolored figure t a after the removal of the clamps. WV hen the article is of straight form, it may be placed either double or single between the elampingpieces, as may he most convenient, and subjected in the sante manner to the dyeing process.
A colored figure may be produced by first dyeing the article of the color desired for the figure and then proceeding as hereinbef'ore described for the production otl the white or uncolored figure.
I am aware that figures have before been produced upon fibrous materials on the same general principle as l have described by clanipinglthe material between surfaces of the form of the desired pattern.
WhatI claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination ot1 the clamping-pieces A A b c d and clamps B B, when constructed and employed in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
JOHN MCFARLANE.
YVitnesses LYMAN ROBINSON, LAWRENCE S. FORMAN.
