n Spccication'forming part .of Letters Patent NoT 112,903, dated May 24, 12364.A
Be itknown that we, L. SCHWARTZ-Koren, ot' Berlin, and EJKASELOWSKY, of Berlin,1n the Kingdom of Prussia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screw and Pipe Wrenches; and we do hereby declare `that the fol-lowing is'a full, clear,A and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part ot -this speciiication,`in'which` Eignre l represents aside elevation of our invention, partly in section, to Iexpose the 'working parts, Fig. 2-is a horizontal section of the sa1ne,take'n in the plane indicated by the line x, Fig. Figi?) shows the appli- -cation of Aour invention to a diiferent class of wrenches than thath represented in the nrevious gures.
Similar-letters of reference in --the various `figures indicate corresponding parts.-
This invention consists in the arrangement `ot'an eccentric recess at tlr'e head of the hinged handle' of a "wrench, in' combination with tog gle-arms interposed between or connecting the head of the handle and themovable jaw ot' the wrench in sucha. mannerjthat by throw- I ing the handle in 'one 4direc-tion the wrench is opened, and bythrowing Ythe handle in the. i
opposite direction the wrench closes and grips a nut lor other article placed between the two jaws, the more firmly the harder the pressure upon thehainlleand the smaller the nit or other article `to be turned bythe action of the wrench.
lTo enablethose skilled in the art4 to make and use our invention, we will proceed yto describe it.
A represents the stationary jaw of a screw Vor pipe wrench, made of iron, steel, or anyv other suitable material. LThe shanka of this jaw is slotted or forked to receive the mova-` l ble jaw B, which is-or may be provided with suitable recesses, to correspond to the forked shank a., in such a manner that the jaw-B' f head c of said handle is provided with aneccentrie recess,l d, one on each side, to receive the end of one of the'toggle-armsc and the, opposite ends ot toggle-arms intothe recesses din the movable jaw, as clearly shown in Fin".-
`1 of the drawing. The togglearms are connected to the headof the handle and to, the
movable jaw by pivots g h,'which, however,
i serve only to hold said arms in` their placts "and to draw the movable jaw back. In moving the movable jaw up toward the stationary jaw the ends of the-togglelarms bear againstv recesses df, and the pivots. gh are relieved from all pressure to which said movable jaw may be exposed. For very light- Work the arms connectedsimply by pivots. SBy referring to Fig. 1.0i' the" drawings Vvitwill be seen that when the handle is lmoved in the direction ot' arrow lv the jaw B moves'oi from the jaw A, and when the handle is moved in the direction of arrow 2 the jaw B moves toward the jaw A.' Consequently, by throwing thehandle in the direction of arrow l the wrench opens, so that it `can beapplied to a 1 nut or other article, and bythrowing `or forcing the handle inthe opposite direction the wrench closes and grips the nutv or otherartn clc` between thel jaws the more Vfirmly the greater the pressure to which vthe handle is eir-V between the-jaws. With smallnuts the pivots g h of the toggle-arms will come nearly in the line with the pivot 'vot' the handle, and the movable jaw will be pressed up against the nutlwith animmense power.
l, rlhe jaws A B maybe made double, as shown inliig. l; or they may he brought in said relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 3, l where the shank of the movable jaw B slides in a recess or slot. in the body or head of the wrench toward and from the stationary jaw A by the action of the handle C on the toggle-arms c. rlhe principle in this case is prc lciselythe same as in the wrench vpreviously described, the sole dierence' being. that the positionof thediiferent parts in relation to each other has been-slightly changed.
It isobviousthat this construction isapplivcable with equal advantage to screw- Wren ches and'. to pipe-wrenches, and one and the same Wrench can. be used for severalsizes.
by Letters .'Iatent, is
The eccentric recess the head'of 'the handle G of awrench, in. combination with the togglearms e and inov-4 'able jaw B, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown amldesc1'^ibed.`
