Description

M. B. REILLY. HAMMER HANDLE ATTACHMENT.
(No Model.)
- Patented May 20, 1890.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
MIOHEAL E. REILLY, OF MONTESANO, WASHINGTON.
HAMMER-HANDLE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,524, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed November 7, 1889. Serial No. 829,547. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIOHEAL E. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mom tesano, in the county of Chehalis and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammer-Handle Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to means for fastening the handles of hammers, hatchets, axes, and such like tools which have an eye to receive a handle that is inserted in an eye of the said tool.
The improvement consists in two keys and a wedge between the keys, which may be separate from or form a part of the said keys.
The improvement further consists of the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, parts being broken away, of a hammer, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line a; 00 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening devices detached, showing their relative arrangement. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of fastening means.
To illustrate the application of my invention I have shown the hammerA and the handle B, it being understood that the hammer is a representative of the class of tools which are adapted to receive a handle B. This handle is provided with the usual kerf in its end to receive the wedge.
The fastening means comprise the two keys D and D, counterparts of one another, one right, the other left, and the wedge E. The keyshave slots (1 and (1 near their upper ends, and the wedge E has lateral lugs e, which are inserted in the said slots d and d. The keys are deflected between their edges to conform to the curved edges of the handle.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The keys having the wedge E between them are inserted in the eye of the tool, and
the handle is placed between the keys and driven in the eye of the said tool, care being taken to have the wedge enter the kerf in the handle. When the handle is driven in flush with the outer side of the tool and is not tight, the wedge is driven in fartheruntil the handle is tightened. The slots at and d are long enough to permit the independent movement of the wedge. To remove the tool, the keys are driven out by tapping on their inner ends, which ends have enlargements f and f to obtain a purchase for the driving implement.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4 the keys G and G are constructed in every respect like the keys D and D, except that the wedge, instead of being in one piece and independent of the keys,'is formed with the keys and in two parts g and g, one part being on each key. There should be one hole in the lower end of the keys near the enlargement on the key, that a screw may be placed in to hold keys firmly to handle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, 1s
1. The hereinbefore-specified tool-handle fastening, composed of two keys and a wedge having positive engagement at its ends with the said keys, whereby the said wedge will be supported in the eye of the tool when the handle isdriven home, substantially as specified.
2. The herein-describedtool-handle fastening, comprising two keys which have enlargements on their inner ends, and the wedge between the outer ends of the keys and supported thereby, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the two keys, of the wedge having laterallugs to engage with and form positive connection with the said keys, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the two keys having slots near their outer ends, of the wedge having lateral lugs, which lugs are adapted to be inserted in and having a limit-ed movement in the said slots, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MIOHEAL E. REILLY.
