Description
(-No Model.)
1-, J. MERRIOK. POST HOLE BIGGER.
No. 428,507. Patented May 20, 1890.
UNITED STATES ATENT @FFICE.
ISAAC JANSON MERRIOK, OF LEESVILLE, OHIO.
POST-HOLE DIGGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,507, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1889. Serial No. 314,957- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC J ANSON MERRIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leesville, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Diggers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined posthole digger and rammer.
The object of the invention is the construction of a device that will combine the features of excavator and rammer, and which will be simple in construction, durable, and efficient.
The improvement consists of the novel features, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view, partly in section, of the implement, showing its operation by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a front view, partly inseetion, of a modification. Fig. ais a horizontal section 011 the line X X of Fig. 1.
-The handle A, which may be solid or tubular, is provided at one end with the shovel blade B, having guarded or flanged edges d (Z, and at its other end with the flattened head C, which is the rammer. The blade B and the rammer C may be formed in one piece with the handle, or may be separated from the handle and welded thereto. The latter is the preferable construction, as the handle may be a piece of gas-pipe, the blade B of steel, and the rammer of steel or casehardened iron. However, the blade, handle, and rammer may be cast at one and the same time, or the blade and rammer may be formed on the ends of a bar of iron or steel by forging.
The handle is approximately triangular shape in cross-section near the blade, the front side being broad and the sides converging, and is strengthened by the rib Z), which extends to the rear side of the blade, where it vanishes, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4. The blade B is set at an angle to the handle, the inclination being at such an angle as is best adapted to the nature of the work.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pattent, is
The herein shown and described tool, comprising handle A, having rammer O at one end and shovel-blade B at its other end, said blade being deflected at its heel from a straight line touching the said handle throughout its length and the edge of the blade and having side flanges d d, the handle being triangular-shaped in cross-section at its lower end, and having rib b, which vanishes in the plane of the shovelblade, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC JANSON MERRIOK.
