UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWVARD F. SOHOLDER, OF FORT SCOTT, KANSAS.
POST-HOLE DIGGER OR EARTH-AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,115, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed February 1, 1889. Serial No. 298,353. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. SCHOLDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Diggers or Earth-Angers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of post-hole diggers or earth-angers to be operated by hand, and it has for its object to simplify and cheapenthe cost of construction of the same, and at the same time to produce a device or implement whereby the labor of cutting or boring of post-holes is rendered easy and convenient and the work expeditiously performed.
To this end the invention consists in the 7 novel and peculiar construction of the device or implement, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had, and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved device or implement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 0000 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View showing the reverse side of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view in elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a pod anger or blade constructed of any suitable metal adapted for the purpose, and of concave and tapering form, said taper beginning from its widest or upper portion and running throughout its entire length, terminating in a peculiarly-constructed narrow portion and curvilinear lip, b, the formation The cutting side or edge of this device or implement, it will be readily perceived, is the enlarged or widest side when taken on its longitudinal plane or axis. Having this or the cutting portion of the pod or blade the widest is of great advantage in the cutting or boring operation of the device or implementas, for instance, in rotating the device or implement by means of a handle, this portion of the blade being the broadest or widest, more scope or area of ground is taken up by, the device or implement than would otherwise be the case were the two sides of the pod or blade of equal width. Therefore less time is consumed and a larger amount of earth taken out in digging the holes.
Bis an elongated shank having its lower end flattened out and provided with perforations therein, which register with perfora tions in the upper portion of the pod or blade and through which rivets d are passed, by which the pod or blade and shank are firmly and strongly connected together. The upper portion of the shank terminates in an eye, 0, through which a handle, D, located at right angles to the shank, is passed and securely held therein.
From the above description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my device or implement will be obvious and further mention herein is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The concave pod or blade A, having its upper portion, where connected to the shank, of greatest width and gradually tapering and terminating in a narrow portion, and an inwardly-curvilinear lip, 19, formed by means of scalloping out a piece of metal, as at a, said lip being located at one side of the longitudinal plane or axis of the pod, and having its cutting side or edge wider than its non-cutting or opposite side, and having the shank B and handle D, all substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD F. SCHOLDER.
