SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,270, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed February 8, 1890.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CARNEY,'1'6- siding at Chicago, in the count-y of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizenof the United '5 States-have invented a new and useful'l-mproveinent in Cash-Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicl L'- xo at line2 of Fig. 1. The objects of. my invention are to provide anim proved key-arrester to provideimproved devices. for locking all of the keys, except those which are being operated; to provide devices, by means of'which, when the'key's which are notbein g operated have been locked and the'drawer opened, such locked keys will 'remain locked until the drawer has been closed, and be unlocked by the closing of the ,drawer,-all ofwhich I accomplish, as illus- 2 5 trated in the drawings, and as hereinafterde scribed.
That which I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, will be pointed out in the claims.

The operation of the parts of my invention already described is as follows: When the keys are in their normal position, the pawlbar I will be in the position represented in Fig. 2. If one ofthe keys be pulled forward, the teeth 0 will engage with the edge '1'- on the pawl-bar I, causing it to assume the position shown in'Fig. 3, and then the springs It will have a tendency to hold such pawl-bar in that position which prevcntstho key from return- H Al ing or being returned to or toward its llttl' mal position until after it has complct ed its fullstrokc, at which time the lower part of the'bar I will come to the smooth part i! on the plate II, and when the key returns to its normal position the teeth 0 will engage with the edge jot the pawl-bar I, which will come into the position shown in Fig. :i', and then the springs 7; will have a tendency to hold such cdgej in engagement with the teeth and notches c, which will prevent the key from being moved in the opposite direction until after .it has completed the return movement. When either one of the keys I) is pulled for- .ward, the bell-bar D is immediately raised through the operation of the proper lever F, which causes the front edge of the standard K; to pass over the rear end of the lever L, liftingsuch end, and thereby depressing the opposite end, which, being in contact with the pawl-bar J ,'forces such bar down into engagement with the teeth c on all of the keys which are not being operated, thereby locking all of such keys.

When one of the keys is operated, the bellbar will be raised by the action of the proper lever F, which will carry the arm q upward until the part r of such arm passes into the notch ;v in the lever Q, the lever L being at. the same time operated upon, as before described, forcing the pawl-bar J into engage-' nent with thetceth e on the plates II of the keys which are not being operated. So long as the arm or bar q remains in engagement with the notch the bell-bar will be held in its raised position, (indicated by dotted lines in' Fig. 4,) which will hold the lever L in engagement with the pawl-bar J, in which position the locked keys cannot be .operated.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a cash-register, a series of keys, each provided with a plate having a series of notches on one edge, in combination with :1
